Thigh high

They hit the fashion spotlight when Cindy Crawford rocked that red swimsuit on the cover of her 90s exercise tape; now, high-leg cuts are getting another well-deserved spell in the sun. We love the two-tone one pieces by new label Maiden – the bubblegum-bright colours look great against sun-kissed and dark skin tones. And the best thing? The cut is super flattering. We can't promise you'll look like Cindy, but we can promise your legs will look a few inches longer.

All tied up

Lace-up ties are big news in our wardrobes this season, and swimwear is no exception. The result: pieces that look a little undone (aka sexy), a little sporty, and are guaranteed to win you maximum fashion points. Take Marysia's signature scalloped maillot – the classic, feminine style has been given a racier spin with a lace-up front; while Stella McCartney's rope-tie swimsuit is perfect for easy beach-to-bar style – just throw on a pair of denim cut-offs. Nautical but nice.

Colour me happy

A LBB (Little Black Bikini) has its place in every suitcase, but if you want to stand out from the swimwear crowd, take your pick from this season’s profusion of bold colour combinations from Solid & Striped, Rye and Stella McCartney. Hunza G’s colour-pop creations are topping our wish list - the signature crinkle-stretch fabric is kind to all body shapes, plus our holiday style icon Pandora Sykes is the brand’s number one fan.

Cartoon capers

Holidays are for having fun, and thankfully there’s no shortage of that in this summer’s swimwear offering. The new collection from Zoe Karssen (available exclusively at Selfridges) captures this season’s frivolous mood; think punchy slogans and playfully positioned cartoon hands. Not to be taken too seriously, this swimwear is cute, flattering and makes you feel good.

Pleats Please Issey Miyake – jumpsuit and hat

///

Jump to it

Our go-to item for work, weddings, and just about every other scenario that requires being dressed, jumpsuits have officially surpassed the dress as the summer outfit of choice. Relaxed, airy and oh-so comfy – they're the perfect touchdown-and-go holiday piece. We love the bold silhouette of this Issey Miyake number – the lightweight pleats mean it's super comfy and won't crease in your suitcase. Glam it up with the matching wide-brimmed hat.

Pitusa – pom-pom beach dress (coming soon)

///

Bobble up

Ever since Fendi and Gucci whipped the fashion world into a pom-pom frenzy a few seasons back, the fluffy adornments have been infiltrating our wardrobes and, this season in particular, our holiday wish lists. So when on the hunt for a beach frock, we fell upon new-to-Selfridges label Pitusa with glee. Specialising in beach and loungewear, the brand’s designs (think bright trims, cute pom-poms, vibrant hues) are made in Peru from fair-trade cotton by women who have been working with the fabric for generations. We love the flirty pom-poms on this slinky white maxi dress. Just add bronzed limbs and tousled locks.

Sand bags

This season's wealth of look-at-me beach bags from Aranaz, Sensi Studio and Kate Spade are too good to be reserved solely for holidays. Our top pick is Sophie Anderson's circular tote, hand-woven in Colombia by the indigenous Wayyu community. Pair with tailored black trousers for city appeal and use all summer to keep the good vibes flowing.

Flights of fancy

Far-flung holiday? Great! Long-haul flight? Not so great. But worry not: all it takes is a few well-chosen essentials to guarantee you a luxurious journey (even if you're stuck in economy). Fend off the dreaded aeroplane air-con in a cashmere jumper and joggers by Madeleine Thompson, while Olivia von Halle's silk eye mask will ensure you get your all-important beauty sleep. Before you drift off, apply Charlotte Tilbury's new Overnight Bronze and Glow Mask – you'll land fresh for arrival, with a flawless tan to boot.

Life's good down under

There's no denying it: the Aussies know good swimwear. Running from 14–20 May in Sydney, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia showcases the latest and greatest in Australian fashion, swim and beachwear. Zimmerman, Rye and Jets are just a few of the 11 Australian swimwear and activewear brands currently stocked at Selfridges. Our Assistant Buyer for the Body Studio Francesca Rees, says, "There is a laidback approach to Australian brands; they never compromise on the best fit and technical quality. I'm excited to see the off-schedule brands this season – that's how we discovered Rye for SS17 and it's been one of our best-selling new labels." Follow Francesca's Australian adventures on our Instagram Stories - @theofficialselfridges.

California dreaming

Going on a road trip in America this summer? Us neither. But we will be getting a taste of the West Coast at our new rooftop restaurant, The Roof Deck, at Selfridges Oxford Street, London. This Californian-style dining space, complete with beach hut cabanas and tropical plants, is the perfect spot to relish the London summer and dine al fresco below a (hopefully) sunny sky. Expect a tasty menu focused on fresh fish, summer salads and the best guacamole in town – all washed down with a frozen cocktail (or two).
