ENTER DISCOVERY MODE

Last season, we had our fashion feelers out, tentatively testing how our tastes had evolved after being cooped up indoors. Now, with the world beginning to open up again and opportunities to travel feeding our newfound wanderlust, we’re raring to push the limits of our personal style. Tapping into this renewed sense of adventure, the SS22 collections at Selfridges are bursting with boundary-pushing designs, bold new designers and pioneering ideas that are daring us to do just that. We’re not talking the dreamy, whimsical aesthetic of seasons past, but a stronger, individual look that exudes confidence and attitude. So join us as we explore this exciting new fashion landscape and discover this season of expressive style.

DISCOVER YOUR BOLD SIDE

Go on, we dare you. If we were to choose a sartorial slogan for SS22, that would be it. Wherever we look this season, designers are encouraging us to turn everything up a notch. Be expressive – theatrical, even – in Louisa Parris’ vibrant silk caftans inspired by contemporary dancers in motion or play up to the sun-soaked, perma-holiday vibes of Paco Rabanne’s crochets and Optical Art prints created in collaboration with the Vasarely Foundation. Or else experiment without the commitment: head to Selfridges Rental, where our buyers are adding key SS22 pieces for you to try out as they land in store – JACQUEMUS’s new Le Bambino Long bag is top of our wish list. Minimalism? We don’t know the meaning of the word.

THE NEW NAMES TO DISCOVER

A clever way to re-energise your personal style is to look beyond the familiar names and seek out those who are driving fashion forward. Alongside the big-hitters at Selfridges is an ever-growing roster of independent designers, Black-owned businesses and our Project Earth edits of fashion that’s better for people and the planet. Chinese-American designer Chet Lo, currently part of the Fashion East incubator programme, has captured our attention with an SS22 collection that highlights his fabric-first approach to creating bright, textural pieces reminiscent of the ‘popcorn tops’ we were all wearing in the early 00s. And we’re eagerly anticipating the upcoming launches from designers centring their craft in their communities: Manchester-born designer Talia Byre who upcycles yarns from local mills for her colour-pop knits; LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize-winner Lukhanyo Mdingi who sources textiles from craft communities in Burkina Faso, Somalia and closer to his home in the Eastern Cape; and Kenneth Ize, who produces 80% of his fabrics in his home country of Nigeria. These clothes are characterful and original – and that reflects back on you.

REDISCOVER THE CLASSICS

Fashion has always looked back for inspiration, but this season, we’re enjoying the shift from abstract influences to direct revival – take this as your cue to play with core pieces in your wardrobe. Newly relaunched Courrèges is leaning into its 60s Space Age heritage, while other designers are picking up on the collective desire to be joyful and a little more out-there with classic style by tailoring in bolder fabrics – look to Camilla and Marc’s sunny-yellow trousers, Acne Studios’ soft pink blazer and Loewe’s metallic shorts. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step, even when the sun isn't shining. To go further still – and earn some earth-conscious credit – explore our RESELLFRIDGES edit for the original, pre-loved pieces spanning Prada shoulder bags, Chanel sunglasses and Hermès silk scarves. Regardless of trends or seasons, if you find a piece you love that really speaks to you, that’s the makings of a timeless investment.
