THE BEAUTY INSIDER:
VALENTINE'S DATE NIGHT VS MATE NIGHT
Whether you're planning to spend Valentine's Day at an intimate table for two or on a dance floor with your best friends, let our beauty expert and Selfridges personal shopper Rose Gallagher show you how to create the perfect beauty looks.
Date-night make-up is all about understated glamour. Feline eyes and a creamy lipstick are a classic, sexy combination, but there are a couple of tricks you can do to ensure your make-up doesn't look too heavy. First: keep your brows simple (bold brows make everything else look heavier). A slick of clear gel to hold them in place will leave you looking groomed and softens the frame of your smokey eye. Second: a glowing complexion looks naturally radiant, in spite of how much colour you wear on your lips or eyes. Prepare the skin with a radiance-enhancing primer and it will give a luminous finish to your foundation.
Selfridges - I Heart You beauty box
Our beauty buyers are the ultimate beauty junkies, and they're constantly scanning Instagram for the best new launches and products, which means our boxes are always jam-packed with total gems. This kit contains the adorable pout-shaped lip balm from Korea's Tony Moly. Worth more than £130, this beauty box is a total steal, making it the ideal gift for a loved one.
Tom Ford – lipstick in Cherry Lush
The most luxe-looking red lipstick in the Beauty Hall, Tom Ford's glamorous Cherry Lush is ideal for a hot date. A moisturising, sculpting lipstick, it clings to the curves of your lips, giving the illusion of fullness. It's simple enough to pair with smokey eyes but bold enough to make the teeth and whites of the eyes look bright and healthy. Pucker up!
Caramel melange eyeshadow palette
Forget the contoured, polished looks you find on Instagram; the sexiest make-up is smudgy and soft. Date night is all about enhancing your natural beauty and keeping it simple. What I love most about Zoeva palettes is that they're easy to blend, giving you a soft finish, but their long-lasting pigment means they'll stay put all night. Use the Caramel Melange palette to add some smokey-brown definition to your lower and upper lash lines, finishing with a touch of colour on the lids.
Narciso Rodriguez – Fleur Musc
A new addition to Narciso's collection of warm, enveloping musks, Fleur Musc is an irresistible date-night scent. The romantic, feminine fragrance merges notes of rose and peony with a bold pink pepper and a grounding base of patchouli. Spray a little into your hair to leave a lasting scent on the pillow of your loved one.
Whether you're getting ready for a girl's night out or staying in, an at-home facial is a must this Valentine's Day and one of my favourite ways to unwind and indulge in some me-time. Take extra time with each step in your regime, massaging the skin as you go to boost the circulation, and it will be glowing in no time.
Tata Harper – resurfacing mask
What better way to spoil yourself this Valentine's Day than with a luxurious resurfacing treatment? This Tata Harper mask gently exfoliates and calms the skin without using harsh microbeads, leaving it looking and feeling brighter and fresher. After use, you'll find that everything else in your skincare regime works twice as hard. I use a resurfacing treatment once a week and my skin has never been better.
MAC – Extra Dimension Skinfinish
If you're planning to spend this Valentine's Day out with the girls, a little shimmer goes a long way. Last autumn, MAC released a series of illuminating powders that add a luminous glow to the skin. After you've applied your make-up, sweep the powder along the cheekbones, cupid's bow, bridge of the nose and brow bones to add a healthy sheen to your make-up. Moisturise exposed limbs and then top with the powder – a low cleavage looks fuller, bare arms look toned and legs look longer and slimmer. Genius. Plus, it will make your Instagram shots look incredible.
Bumble & Bumble – Balm-to-Oil Pre-Shampoo Mask
This pre-shampoo treatment from Bumble & Bumble is perfect for dry, frizzy hair. Apply it evenly in sections, leaving it in for 20 minutes, and then rinse in the shower before you wash your hair. If you're planning a girl's night out, it will give you a glossy, shiny blow-dry. Or, if, like me, you'll be spending Valentine's night in your PJs, wrap your hair in cling film after you've applied it and leave it to work for as long as you can. The heat it generates seals in extra moisture. Worth staying in for, I reckon.
Selfridges - I ♥ Me beauty box
A Selfridges beauty box wouldn't be complete without a specially made bag, and the 'I Love Me' pouch in this one is my favourite Valentine's pick. The bag's mix of skin, make-up, body and nail care is worth over £118, making it the perfect treat for yourself. Go on, you deserve it.
