The fashion powerhouse has moved into the beauty world with a make-up and skincare line powered by AI tech and inspired by the brand’s iconic fashion archive. Here’s everything you need to know about the launch.

1. The Prada print factory

Prada’s journey into beauty began at its fashion archives. Lynsey Alexander, Prada’s Global Creative Makeup Artist, started creating the make-up three years ago. “I was given incredible access to books and online archives of Prada fashion from the past decades (which held over 27,000 textiles and patterns). I was shipped amazing samples of materials, including beautiful iconic prints and the signature Saffiano leather and nylon. Inspired by the textures and colours, we created an array of eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks that Miuccia Prada and I whittled down to the final products you see today.”

The six prints that inspired the eyeshadow palettes span geometric patterns seen at the 1996 runway show to William Morris flowers that decorated shirts and dresses in 2003. You can have yours customised, too: each of the six designs can be UV printed onto the eyeshadow palette’s packaging or Prada fragrance of choice at counters in Selfridges stores.

2. Physical meets digital

Always ahead of the curve, Prada has appointed artists who represent both the physical and digital aspects of beauty. Alongside Lynsey is Ines Alpha, a 3D artist who explores augmented reality and avant-garde make-up in the digital world. Ines is Prada’s Global Creative E-Makeup Artist – this first-of-its-kind role meant she and Lynsey could, “challenge the limits of make-up in the physical world and push the boundaries of beauty by embracing self-expression and the power to shape one’s identity.”

The pair worked closely in developing the make-up shades. “Where my work involves getting models of all different skin tones and colour-testing in person, Ines can do this in an instant, which is an incredible tool,” says Lynsey. “I then had to make sure the colours Ines created translated onto real-life faces – it really challenged me to create totally unique shades."

3. Rethinking skin

Prada’s debut skincare products are all about supporting the skin to renew, reinforce and, ultimately, help our skin adapt to our busy lives. They have developed Adapto.gn Smart Technology™, which uses natural actives called adaptogens – a family of 15 rare plants that have existed for over 400 million years withstanding extreme conditions. (In other words, they’re more than up to the task of soothing skin after five-hours’-sleep and a busy office with air conditioning.) These actives join skincare favourites hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and ceramides to create formulas that nourish, revitalise and support the skin’s all-important barrier function.

The innovative foundation formula uses IRL-micro-filter™  technology to optimise light diffusion and give a soft-filter effect to the skin. Joining the party are vitamin E and niacinamide (the A* ingredient of the moment) to improve skin tone and moisture levels over time. The foundation comes in 33 shades, spanning cool, neutral and warm undertones that used AI tech to create an algorithm of 3,000 different skin tones for the most accurate colour matching possible.

4. An invitation to experiment and express

Prada’s answer to make-up reflects the brand’s approach to fashion: instead of following trends, Lynsey says: “Prada is all about finding your mood and expressing yourself”. When developing the products, she knew she wanted the lipsticks to be matte. “As a make-up artist and everyday woman, [I knew that] matte is what you wear when you want your lipstick to last. Thankfully, Miuccia Prada wanted the same (you’ll always see matte lips on the Prada runways, going right back to the first ready-to-wear show in 1988). We created two different types of matte lipstick: the soft-matte finish is inspired by the iconic Re-Nylon fabric – it uses a white pigment as the base for a luminous, diffused finish. The hyper-matte mimics the rich depth of [Prada’s] Saffiana leather and uses a black pigment base for an opaque, intense finish.”

What Lynsey loves about the eyeshadow palettes is that “there are three really wearable shades with one surprise pop of colour”. Her favourite? “No.2 Profusion – it’s a mix of easy-to-wear metallics, a black powder to add definition or liner, alongside a bright yellow. It’s a real power statement that feels very Prada."

5. Artfully responsible

As expected, the new products mirror the artful aesthetic and functional qualities that are so synonymous with Prada – from the leather-effect lipstick bullets embossed with the Prada triangle logo, to the refined packaging.

The Augmented Skin Cream and Serum come in refillable packaging – the day and night cream is made with 85% less packaging (compared to repurchasing the full product) and the serum uses 72% less. Still a relatively rare find in beauty, the Prada Reveal Foundation is refillable alongside the entire lipstick line and six eyeshadow palettes, so you can easily mix and match.

Prada Beauty is available online and launches at Selfridges London on 18 August, Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square on 21 August, Selfridges Birmingham on 10 September, and Selfridges Manchester Trafford on 17 September.
