Selfridges Loves: treasures from our Accessories Hall

Our new Accessories Hall at Selfridges Oxford Street, London, is like a Santa’s grotto for grown-ups, filled with exquisite bags, glistening jewellery and wearable objet d’art. With so many beautiful things to choose from, we’ve cherry-picked our favourite pieces from the biggest accessories trends of the season, making the perfect Christmas gift for the fashion aficionado in your life, or simply for treating yourself, because, well…you’ve been very good this year.

Hot fuzz

Faux fur, velvet, brocade, suede: winter is about to get a whole lot cosier with this season’s crop of textured bags. We love Simone Rocha’s plush shoulder bag, tied up with a giant fluffy bow; it’s the next best thing to taking your pet to the office (and likely to attract just as many adoring onlookers clambering for a stroke).

Midnight hour

“Navy is big news in accessories this season,” says our Designer Accessories Buyer Sarah Cartwright. “It offers an interesting alternative to black, but is just as versatile.” Which is why we asked several of our favourite designers, including M2Malletier, Altuzarra and Launer, to create midnight-blue bags exclusively for us. We love this velvet shopper by Hayward – never has tossing your keys into your bag been so chic.

Objet d’art

Is it a precious stone? Is it a sculpture? Is it a bag? One thing’s for sure: Nathalie Trad’s out-of-this-world creations make for quite the conversation starter at evening events. Her exquisite minaudières are hand-crafted from natural materials, including mother of pearl and sea shells, meaning no two are identical.

Wrist watch

All eyes are on the wrists this season as we’ve introduced cuff designer Catherine Osti to our new Accessories Hall. Osti cut her teeth at Chanel’s tailoring atelier in Paris before going on to build her own couture label based on one simple concept: giving the classic shirt cuff the ultimate designer makeover. New to Selfridges this season, her exquisite tailored, pleated and embellished cuffs are perfect for shaking up evening looks. Or style with shirts and long-sleeved tops to add some flair to everyday ensembles.

Shape shifters

A bag shaped like our favourite pastry: now that’s what we call a perfect accessory. The Balmain Croissant (can you get any more Parisian than that?) is one of the unusually shaped bags catching our eye this season as designers break free of traditional tote territory. Look to The Row, Hayward and Marni for more unexpected silhouettes.

Shoulders may have been fashion’s favourite body part for the past few seasons, but now it has shifted up approximately six inches to the ear lobes. Sculptural earrings resembling art gallery exhibits have become the accessory du jour thanks to their versatility; simply throw on a pair with the most understated of outfits for instant style kudos. And where better to do that than our permanent Personalisation Atelier in the Accessories Hall. With its range of workshop-style services, including bespoke Boyarde hand-painting, classic hot-stamping and monogramming, as well as a selection of stickers, charms and straps to make your accessory one-of-a-kind, there's no better way to give your wardrobe the personal touch.

In our selfie-obsessed times, when our phone is undoubtedly one of our most cherished possessions (don’t deny it), it’s no wonder that this year’s It-accessory isn’t a bag but a phone case. To celebrate the launch of the new Google Pixel 2, Google has partnered with 10 forward-thinking fashion designers, including Charles Jeffrey, Marques’Almeida and Art School, to design unique cases, available exclusively at Selfridges. We can feel a mirror selfie coming on.

From Paris with love

Famed for his perfumes and scented vinegars, Jean-Vincent Buly founded the original Buly boutique in 1803 on Paris’ Rue Saint-Honoré. Today, Buly 1803 brings its beautiful apothecary-style creams, balms and cosmetics to the Selfridges London Accessories Hall, with a small selection available at selfridges.com. What to buy for the person who has (almost) everything? We say, Buly 1803’s mint, cucumber and coriander Opiat Dentaire – aka the world’s most stylish toothpaste.

Our giant inflatable Santa, bouncing away in the corner window of our new Accessories Hall, has become quite the celebrity since he was unveiled to the world, posing for countless photo opportunities. Throw in the extraordinary Louis Vuitton pop-up space designed by Jeff Koons and the giant ‘With Love From’ neon installation taking pride of place on the corner of the store, and our new Accessories Hall is one of the most papped Christmas shopping spots in London. No filter required.
