High-shine hair, power pouts and gothic glamour: the SS24 beauty trends to try now

The biggest beauty trends set to headline the season.

As another fashion month wraps up, our senior beauty editor looks at some of the key spring/summer 2024 beauty trends to emerge from the shows and shares how to wear them now (and beyond).

Prada SS24

Lacquer up

High-shine gloss was everywhere this season – from a radiant sheen on cheekbones to glossy accents across eyelids. The SS24 Prada beauty look was all about lacquered lids, inspired by the viral slime that fell from the ceiling throughout the show. “We used a mixture of beige, peach and pink eye shadow all over the lid and applied the skin serum over the top to create this amazing wet, lacquered skin that looked like glass” explains Lynsey Alexander, Prada’s Global Creative Makeup Artist. “This effect became kind of fetish-y, PVC and like patent leather.”

Colour crush

A maximalist abundance of colour was few and far between this season; instead, designers and make-up artists opted for flashes of colour amongst a clean, pared-back base. From sherbet colour combinations at Giorgio Armani and Simone Rocha to cobalt blue shadow placed either side of the lid at Tiffany Brown, and a hint of baby blue liner under the lash line at 16 Arlington. A coloured eyeliner or cream shadow stick are an easy way to dip your toe into the colour pop trend – simply run your favourite shade along the eye lid or lash line and blend out with a fluffy brush.

High-shine hair

Super sleek, glossy hair was spotted on the catwalks in all four cities – from a modern take on 1920s gelled finger waves at Giorgio Armani, to wet-look sculptural strands at Jason Wu (a nod to the TikTok ‘mermaidcore’ trend perhaps). At Richard Quinn, stylist Sam McKnight’s high-shine braided chignons were created using the Self-Control Gel to set the hair and Modern Hairspray to tame and polish flyaways. "A true wet look can get messy" says hair stylist Cyndia Harvey. "When being worn for real life, use a product that looks more wet than it actually is. An oil-based cream or high-shine serum will give you that wet-gloss look without feeling sticky.”

David Koma SS24

Modern minimalism

The ‘clean girl’ aesthetic continues to evolve as skin was given an ultra-groomed glow this season. The 'no-make-up-make-up' look was (quite literally) embraced by Pamela Anderson, who sparked conversation after turning up to a number of shows in Paris make-up free for what she coined "a little act of rebellion". Keeping fresh, healthy skin the star of the show, David Koma and The Row reflected the brand's quiet luxury asthetic through expensive barely-there bases, brushed up brows, a hint of mascara and natural, moisturised lips.

Power pouts

The antithesis of minimalism, statement lips stood out on the runways of Alexander McQueen and Schiaparelli, where velvet red lips took centre stage. “To me, a bold red lip is always iconic and the ultimate representation of glamour” explained make-up artist Pat McGrath. For the Schiaparelli SS24 show, McGrath used MatteTrance lipstick in Forbidden Love as the base all over the lips, then pressed the Obsession shade into the centre for a multidimensional effect. Elsewhere, Gucci's glossy berry lips mimicked the patent leather pieces from the collection. Make-up artist Thomas de Kluyver topped raspberry lipsticks with the multi-use gloss for a high-shine finish.

Dior SS24

Gothic glamour

Just in time for autumn and Halloween season, the spring/summer runways saw a gothic ‘witchy’ theme emerge. Spidery lashes stood out at Victoria Beckham, who described the mood as “feminine with an edge,” using lashings of the new Vast Lash Mascara on models for extra drama. At Dior, make-up artist Peter Philips created lips that were lined and darkened in the centre to give “a witch-like bitten-lip effect.” Create this at home with a deep red, burgundy lip liner and blend out with a brush.
