Since you wear your fragrance every day, choosing a scent that you’ll love on repeat is key. Need a little guidance? We asked Selfridges’ Fragrance Buyer, Laurie Field, to give us a heads up on the top eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne fragrances to watch this year. Read on to discover the aftershaves that she predicts will be top of everyone’s wish lists in 2023.

Woody

When it’s cold outside, reaching for a scent that revitalises you is just the pick-me-up you need. Laurie confirms: “In the colder months, we tend to see richer, warming scents resonate the most with our customers, with families such as woods and amber performing well.” Take the woody spice and aromatic notes of Atkinsons Oud Save The King, in just three months the aftershave has seen its searches peak 120% while Le Labo's Santal 33 timeless scent guides you into the world of warming fragrances making it the perfect place to begin.

Citrus

Spring is all about fresh starts – so why not match your fragrance to that feeling? Recommending scents that speak to energy and vibrancy, Laurie says, “Citrus and florals really start to come to the fore from spring, as the weather gets warmer and days get lighter. For this season, we’re seeing fragrances that feel crisp and bright doing well.” As Selfridges sees a 86% increase in searches, lean into the fresh citrus fragrance family with Guerlain’s Eau de Cologne du Coq or Bond No. 9’s Chez Bond eau de parfum for a woody-meets-citrus everyday faithful.

Florals

The world of floral fragrances is vast, which gives you the perfect opportunity to switch things up as often as you want. If you like the idea of matching your scent to your mood, florals may just be the aroma that your days were missing. Laurie says, “For me, I like to pick a fragrance depending on how I feel or want to feel that day. But I particularly like the warmth of an amber or a fougère, such as sage or lavender, on a man.” Get started with Aesop’s Erémia eau de parfum, a spirited nod to the family of fresh florals that is proving popular this year with searches rising 88% over the year. Or experiment with the spicy floral tones of Maison Francis Kurkdjian's L’Homme À la Rose eau de parfum in line with Laurie’s advice: “A rose base can work really well on men, especially when combined with woody or aromatic notes.”

Spice

When asked which particular cologne trends customers should have on their radar, Laurie answered “aromatic pepper”, which brings us nicely onto our last family focus: spice and aromatics. These fragrances are ideal for evening events and special occasions. Ready to try? Look to Frederic Malle's Musc Ravageur eau de parfum, where the fragrance has seen a 57% uplift in search demand over the past year due to its soft launch into spice. When it comes to combination fragrances, the spicy citrus notes of Sisley’s Eau d'ikar eau de toilette are powerfully seductive and increasingly popular. With a 100% year on year lift, it’s one to watch out for.
