ENTER DISCOVERY MODE

After a couple of post-lockdown seasons, we’re feeling emboldened and ready to experiment sartorially. The time we spent last season bolstered our sense of personal style, and now we’re looking to test its limits with fashion that’s fun, future-facing and freeing. Daring us to do so, the new collections at Selfridges are packed with designers both new and established offering up pieces that stand out because of their bold aesthetics or the boundary-pushing ideas they represent. From trophy pieces to the styles we wear day in, day out, find your new favourites here.

DISCOVER YOUR BOLD SIDE

Fun is firmly back on our agenda this season – now’s the time to explore and find pieces that make each of us feel good, whatever that looks like for you. London-based designer Bianca Saunders told us how expression is integral to her design process, “I always think about how I want men to feel while wearing my clothing. I want them to feel confident, sexy and independent.” Colour and pattern are easy ways to crank up that confidence: paying colourful tributes to their hometowns, Dries Van Noten had fun with trippy Antwerp prints, while Eli Russell Linnet imagined hitchhiking home to California in ERL’s bright corduroy trousers and fuzzy knits. Alternatively, you can try styles before you buy: Loewe’s lime-green knit and Issey Miyake’s equally verdant hoody are part of our Selfridges Rental offering. There’s endless room to experiment.

DISCOVER THE FUTURE OF MENSWEAR DESIGN

From jewellery to jackets, across our menswear collections this season we’re looking to the independent, Black-owned, and earth-conscious designers driving fashion forward with fresh, future-facing – and, yes, fun – perspectives. Among these names to know, London-based, British-Jamaican designer Martine Rose’s ode to all-night raves, Wales Bonner’s uptempo collection inspired by Burkina Faso nightlife in the 70s, and soon-to-Selfridges brand Botter’s optimistic recycled scuba styles for its sustainability-themed ‘Global Warning’ show. As for accessories, the pearls, colourful beads from the likes of unisex jewellery brand Polite Worldwide are a subtle way to amp things up.

REDISCOVER CORE STYLES

It may seem contradictory after lauding loud prints and silhouettes, but there’s a compelling reason to focus, too, on the quieter corners of the SS22 collections: the devil is in the details. Pay special attention to levelling up the pieces that you’ll turn to time and again. For smart tailoring and grab-and-go denim alike, there’s endless opportunity to make a point of perfecting the fundamentals – take king of craft-with-quirk Jonathan Anderson and his patchwork take on striped shirting, Carhartt WIP’s organic-cotton pastel denim from our Project Earth For Nature edit, the tweaked shoulders of Bianca Saunders’ blazers and Helmut Lang’s play on military shirts. Each show how focussing on the finer points can really pay dividends.
