The SS24 menswear trends to have on your radar

The menswear trends to have on your radar

Big Kenergy, redone denim, quiet luxury: here’s our fashion editor’s guide to getting ahead of next season.

Words: Anish Patel

At the SS24 menswear shows, the message – and the clothes – were loud, confident and designed to stick around. Tailoring that’s made for going out, rather than going to work, has returned in a big way; and denim continues to be reinvented. We like to get ahead, so here’s our fashion editor’s guide on how to wear next season’s biggest looks, now.

1. The denim remix

We’ll always have time for denim, and denim will never be far from the runways. But what’s next season’s twist? In short: baggy fits, co-ords and a whole lot of patchwork. Pharrell Williams’s debut menswear collection for Louis Vuitton summed up the mood best with matching denim jackets and low-rise jeans that nodded to the 90s.

2. Quiet luxury

You’ve probably heard about quiet luxury by now. Ironically, it’s become quite a loud presence in pop culture, thanks to Succession and a certain actor-turned-wellness-guru’s ski-accident trial. Think logo-less swathes of cashmere, minimalistic tailoring and timeless coats. These pieces were everywhere this summer and are set to stick around, judging by Salvatore Ferragamo, Loewe and Dries Van Notens SS24 shows.

3. Workwear 2.0

If one thing was hammered home at Milan Fashion Week, it was that utility is back. Fabrics were lightweight but hardwearing, pockets grew in both number and size, and technical details such as zips, buckles and belt fastenings were everywhere. Fendi went as far as showing tool belts. The takeaway? It’s no longer sufficient for your clothes to just look good – they have to do something, too.

4. Dressing for dystopia

The end of the universe is still a few billion years away, but with the rise of fantasy TV shows such as Silo and the seemingly never-ending Y2K resurgence, clothes are looking increasingly like they should be worn in a distant dystopian city (or on Mars). Look for deconstructed tops in gradient tones, metallic trainers and accessories fashioned from high-tech fabrics.

5. Big Kenergy

In case you haven’t noticed, we are deep into the Barbie-verse right now. Greta Gerwig’s film is proving to be summer’s big blockbuster, and everything, everywhere, is pink. From high-voltage, hot-pink tailoring at Valentino to sorbet shades at Amiri, Barbie-and-Kenergy is at an all-time high. Be bold with a full look or subtle with a crochet bucket hat.

6. Silver standards

Men’s jewellery has been evolving. These days, there’s so much more to pick from than a signet ring or simple chain – and even those have been reimagined in creative new ways. From beaded necklaces (see Harry Styles for styling inspiration), to avant-garde earrings, it’s time to dip your toe, finger or ear into something silver.

7. The Ripley reboot

The Talented Mr. Ripley is never far from menswear moodboards. A remake is due later this year, which could have something to do with all the elegant menswear lined up for next season. It’s peak Dickie Greenleaf: decadent but deshabille tailoring, knitted polo tops and linen shirts in neutral tones. For added punch: add silver jewellery (see entry 6).
