When it comes to a new season, it's not always easy to tell which items are guaranteed to become your all-time wardrobe favourites. Add to that the pressure of a gazillion Instagram feeds of impossibly well-groomed street stylers, and the whole thing can get a little overwhelming. Thankfully, we're here to help. Welcome to our rundown of the most amazing items that will bring some intrigue, individuality and, hey, even a touch of humour to your wardrobe…

Have your Hollywood moment

New-to-Selfridges brand Hollywood Trading Company re-engineers vintage styles for unique pieces that are rich in history and have a rebellious spirit. Blending the resurgence of military style with a distinctive Hollywood-rock-god-worthy edge, H-T-C (as the loyal wearers call it) has us in La La Land, dreaming of driving a Harley Davidson along the Hollywood Hills. And you thought just tap dancing on those heights was cool, Mr Gosling!

Head to La La Land

Versus Versace - shirt (coming soon) and printed bomber / Converse - sneakers

While easy-to-wear basics are handy staples for your day-to-day (particularly on those mornings when you've pressed the snooze button one too many times), it's also important to have those key pieces that allow you to revel in the flamboyant side of fashion: the conversation starters. Pieces that shout luxury. Items that make you feel amazing every time you wear them. And who, you ask, can provide such swoon-worthy garb? Step up the kings of ostentatiousness: Versus Versace (arriving at this season in a flurry of bold graphic prints), Saint Laurent and Gucci. If it feels good and gives an instant confidence boost, wear it. That's our motto.

Seek a wardrobe treasure

Humour me

Waking up to not-so-cheery news notifications and rainy mornings doesn't always make for a joyful start to the day. But do you know what does? Hopping out of bed and pulling on some fashion that makes you smile. From Christopher Shannon's wry rift on the Sports Direct logo to Bobby Abley's Power Ranger collection and Kenzo's signature playful prints - make 2017 the year you invite a touch of humour into your wardrobe.

Wear a smile

Craig Green - printed jacket and shorts (coming soon)

The cult of Craig

During London Fashion Week Men's last month, Craig Green cemented his position as Britain's most compelling menswear designer. Why? Maybe it's his unwavering dedication to his unique cuts and methods of construction. Perhaps it's his ability to fuse global influences with ease. For us, it's about the cult following he has garnered in just a few seasons - seriously, if you had tied the front row together by the strapping on his signature jackets, they would have wound around Selfridges two-fold. "It's a sense of belonging," said Green of this season's glorious collection, highlighting how, for many guys, his designs offer a way to dress distinctively while being part of something bigger.

Go green

Amiri - patchwork jacket (coming soon)

Jean genius

Ankle-swallowing baggy jeans, patches, rips and ribbing - this season, denim means business. From channelling your wilder fashion leanings with Amiri's signature animal-print patches and rips (pictured), to donning Gucci's retro embroidered and bleach-wash jeans - there are so many ways to add a whole new flavour to the versatile staple this season. Whether you pile it high for a full denim look (always with contrasting washes, of course) or pair a patchwork denim jacket with more subdued separates is up to you. Just be sure to take your denim somewhere different this season.

Do it in denim

Raf Simons - cropped sweater (coming soon) / Robert Mapplethorpe-print oversized shirt (coming soon) and cropped pants

Picture this

Today, stepping into a store can feel a lot like stepping into an art gallery (yes, a shopping trip just isn't complete without knocking into an installation piece) - except now it's the clothes themselves taking an artistic turn. Raf Simons' collection weaves Robert Mapplethorpe's iconic photographs throughout the longline cuts and amazingly textured knits for something more authentic - almost like a collaboration between artist and designer. As the lines between sartorial and curatorial choices become well and truly blurred, us guys can make an artistic statement simply by pulling on a sweater. Splendid.
