NO NOISE AT SELFRIDGES
From 7 January to end of February, Selfridges introduces the new store-wide concept, No Noise. In an initiative that goes beyond retail, the project invites you to celebrate the power of quiet, see the beauty in function and find calm among the crowds.
Here’s how you can experience the tranquility of No Noise at Selfridges:
THE SILENCE ROOM
In the Ultralounge on LG
When we first opened our doors in 1909, Harry Gordon Selfridge created a Silence Room where busy shoppers could “retire from the whirl of bargains and the build up of energy”. We think we need it now more than ever, so have brought it back as part of our No Noise initiative.
Designed by architect Alex Cochrane, this reincarnation of the Silence Room has an insulated inner-sanctum, shielded from the noise and human traffic of the store. Use the space to relax, unwind and de-stress. All we ask is that you leave your shoes, phones and 21st century distractions in the lockers provided.
THE QUIET SHOP
In the Concept Store on G
Join us as we pay homage to the heroes of minimalism with a carefully curated edit from the spring/summer 2013 catwalks. Plus, some of the world’s most recognisable brands have taken the admirable step of removing their logos in our collection of de-branded products - including Beats by Dre, Levi’s, Marmite and Crème de la Mer - each creating exclusive collector’s items of the future.
In a project that fuses installation art and window design, the windows provide a quietly brilliant visual representation of the key No Noise themes. In the Orchard Street windows, artist Katie Paterson has created four installation artworks that explore the concept of space, time and the wider cosmos.
Throughout the store you will find dedicated Headspace Pods, serving simple and easy-to-follow guided meditations that will take no more than 10 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a little more clarity in your life, some creative inspiration or a boost to your self-esteem, it’s time to treat yourself to some more headspace.
Join Headspace founder Andy Puddicome in the Silence Room on Sunday 10 February from 12 to 1pm as he hosts 10 minute meditation sessions.
Every Sunday 1pm, in books on LG,
Join us every Sunday for a series of talks presented by the Idler Academy. Whether you’re into fishing, the Romantic poets or cloud spotting, they offer the chance for quiet, thoughtful contemplation.
JOHN CAGE ORCHESTRA
23 February, 1.45, 2.45 and 3.45pm in the atrium.
Join us for a live orchestra performance with a difference as John Cage's 4'33 seconds consists of the noise of the environment that's created during the performance, rather than the instruments themselves.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT AT SELFRIDGES
4 Jan - 17 Feb, in the Foodhall on G
Enjoy the pleasures of simple food with Food for Thought at Selfridges, our celebration of uncomplicated, organic and raw ingredients. As well as special menus in our restaurants, we’ll be hosting nutrition clinics and sampling organic and bio-dynamic wines.
