OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Selfridges has always been more than a shop. From the start of our journey in 1909, our founder Harry Gordon Selfridge sought to do things differently through extraordinary experiences. As Harry Gordon said when he opened our first store, ‘Everyone is welcome’, and to this day these words ring true. Harry was renowned for championing women’s rights, from creating window displays supporting the suffragettes to opening the first toilets for women in a department store. Today, we’re working to continue Harry’s legacy in making Selfridges a truly diverse and inclusive environment in which to work and shop – for our teams, our customers and our partners.

WHY IT MATTERS

Selfridges is a place where we want everyone to bring their whole selves and feel a sense of belonging. We believe being a diverse and inclusive brand is critical to our success. We’re working hard to not only increase the visibility and recognition of under-represented talent within our organisation, but the wider industry too. Our award-winning teams have been recognised at the British Diversity Awards and Diversity in Luxury Awards, and we’ve pledged our commitment to initiatives that will support us in driving forward our diversity agenda, such as Exceptional Individuals and Diversity in Retail.

OUR ROADMAP TO AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE

Everyone is Welcome sessions

Through our Everyone is Welcome sessions, we discovered there was a need for a larger quiet room in Selfridges Oxford Street to support religious observation. For example, to support Muslim team members seeking a space for quiet contemplation and prayer, especially through the holy month of Ramadan.

Improving our disclosure rates

Broadening our conversations with team members through a cultural assessment resulted in them feeling more empowered to disclose their protected characteristics, such as gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability and religion. Our disclosure rate is 81.2% and our response rate is 86.4%, more than double the industry-standard rate of response. *Team members choosing to disclose their demographic information.

We became members of Diversity in Retail

We’re committed to cultivating the behaviours, attitudes and environments that enable equal and equitable opportunities for minority groups. That’s why we signed up to become a member of Diversity in Retail to support our team members from minority groups to develop and progress into senior roles and to provide access to mentors. Across our business it’s about facilitating and delivering the right opportunities for our team members so they can grow and succeed.

We launched Chat for Change

Our ‘Chat for Change’ initiative gives team members a forum to talk about a wide range of diversity topics. In the 25 sessions since its creation, over 1200 team members have come together to discuss everything from mental health in the workplace and gender pronouns to Neurodiversity and Anti-Semitism. External community experts have joined these conversations too including activist Peter Tatchell and author Magdalene Abraha.

Since hosting Chat for Change discussions, we have developed extensive inclusive leadership training to equip our managers with the tools they need to have confident, open and honest conversations around equity in our business. More than 450 Selfridges Managers have been trained in inclusive leadership so far. Our inclusive leadership training is just the beginning, and we plan to extend this to all team members.

Leveraging our recruitment process

Our recruitment process has been designed to enhance the richness and diversity of our team member population. Our recruitment teams are trailblazers for inclusive hiring across the business. They have trained all hiring managers to ensure every candidate’s experience is consistent, fair and transparent.

We have clear targets in place to ensure we increase our representation of females in senior roles and increase ethnic representation in all roles at every level.

In addition to our core recruitment processes, we actively work with charities and not-for-profit organisations who support women and young people, delivering employability training to a number of organisations and employing team members from our partnerships with Centrepoint and Code First Girls.

Our aim is to provide meaningful, paid employment to people from the communities we serve.

The Yellow Careers Club

At Selfridges, we are dedicated to fostering internal progression opportunities for our team members. We proudly launched The Yellow Careers Club in 2023 to support team members with career advice and professional development.

The Yellow Careers Club is an integral part of inclusive talent management, providing an opportunity for growth and career development of our team members and ultimately supporting our succession planning strategy, ensuring transparency and equity to drive internal mobility.
