The 2019 beauty review

Hit launches. Game-changing moments. Hero bestsellers.

Ah, 2019: what a year for us beauty enthusiasts. From blockbusting bestsellers, to pioneering in-store pop-ups and the most major beauty launch of the year – we’re looking at you, Pat McGrath! – we’re reflecting on the best of beauty at Selfridges. Here are just a few of our 2019 highlights – including your 10 most-loved products. After all, there’s room for one more thing in our stocking, right Santa?

The MAJOR launch

Earlier this year, we welcomed the ‘Mother’ of make-up herself, Pat McGrath, to Selfridges for a true Technicolour takeover. She celebrated her UK homecoming with a range of products that (quite literally) broke the internet and became instant bestsellers – from her standout lipsticks to the eyeshadow palettes behind those hypnotic Instagram videos.

The new tech wonder

The Dyson Airwrap topped headlines in 2019 – and our most-sought-after product spot – with its brand-new approach to hair styling. So how does it work? Well, the barrels curl or wave the hair, while the brush attachments smooth and volumise. The styler uses an aerodynamic Coanda effect, which attracts and wraps the hair around the barrel, without using extreme heat. Take it from us, you need to see it to believe it – we recommend a YouTube session to see it in all its glory.

The lipsticks we love:
Seeing red

This iconic lipstick is a fan favourite due to its incredibly rich, matte formula. Our bestselling shade? Rouge Louboutin (shown here), aka the ultimate red. Wear with lashings of mascara and a clean, natural base for an effortlessly chic look.

The lipsticks we love:
A 90s nude

Pat McGrath's second entry in our 2019 hit list, with her take on a matte lipstick, MatteTrance. The formula is a lightweight veil that still offers punchy opaque coverage, and this 90s brown-nude is the most popular shade from the range. OK, we all enjoy a strong red lip, but the ease and wearability of a good nude lipstick shouldn’t be underestimated.

The #filter effect

Earlier this year, social-media mogul Huda Kattan paid a visit to our London store, and caused quite the commotion – there were queues out of the door of followers dying to meet her! She also launched a full-coverage foundation that gives skin a flawless filter effect IRL. Unsurprisingly, it became an instant hit. The highly pigmented formula is not messing about, with a demi-matte finish that covers everything from spots to pigmentation.

The scent-sation of the year

And the winner is... Another 13. Made up of (you guessed it) 13 ingredients – including jasmine, moss and ambroxan (a creamy, heady musk) – this unisex scent is both sexy and understated. It’s addictive too; once you smell it, you’ll demand to know what it is, and then find yourself reaching for it time and time again. Which, thankfully, is made all the easier with their brilliant – and more sustainable – fragrance refill service in store. Little wonder, then, it bagged a spot in our top 10 bestsellers.

Originally launched as a limited edition, Another 13 has now become a cult line for Le Labo. I love it! It’s totally unique and I get so many compliments on my morning commute.

The plastic-conscious beauty movement

While we’re on the subject of our very best moments of 2019, we simply had to mention our Project Ocean Beauty Booth which opened earlier this year. The pop-up space in Selfridges London was filled with plastic-conscious beauty solutions for your everyday routine – from planet-friendly make-up removers (bye, bye disposable face wipes!) to plastic-free soaps and refillable fragrances. Look out for more updates in 2020…

The new suits-all palette

Part of the oh-so-popular Pillow Talk range, this eye quad garnered quite the fanbase after it launch earlier this year (including many here at Selfridges HQ). The pink and nude matte shades are universally flattering, and there’s even a glitter to ramp up the look for evening. Plus, the shades blend really easily so you don’t need pro make-up skills to apply them.

The miracle worker

The Concentrate has made its way into countless bathroom cabinets – not to mention numerous bestsellers’ lists – over the years thanks to its popular multitasking formula. Infused with the brand’s iconic revitalising Miracle Broth™, it calms redness and irritation as well as strengthens and protects the skin from future stress.

The lash lifter

You may already know (or own) the cult CC Cream that put It Cosmetics on the map, but this mascara is the dark horse of the collection – and a global bestseller for 2019. The jet-black formula adds serious definition, all without needing to faff about with eyelash curlers or apply layer after layer. Plus, the transfer-free formula means once it’s on, it’s going nowhere.

The new recruit that's changed the game

Cult skincare line The Ordinary joined our beauty roster this year, and this potent serum was one of our most popular products in 2019. Featuring two of the most effective ingredients to tackle spots, niacinamide and zinc both work to decongest the skin, speed up the recovery of blemishes and minimise pores. Win, win.
