The new mood for menswear

A men’s guide to autumn/winter ’19

From the most talked-about new brands to key movements in menswear, we’ve uncovered what’s in store for the new season by speaking to our experts and some of the most notable designers of today. You read it here first.

The Soloist sets the stanzas

Hailed as ‘wearable stanzas of poetry’ by Vogue, The Soloist’s latest collection blends utility details with poetic touches (think black-and-white photography and bold typographic statements). Post-punk? Intellectual streetwear? Avant-garde? However you want to label it, be sure The Soloist will defy conventions season after season.

Flying Soloist

There are more and more 'things' flooding the market that consumers don’t necessarily want. Stories or a powerful narrative humanise the ritual of consumption. Brands that hone in on a niche or a quirk are more likely to cut through the noise than a blanket offer that is mass produced. It’s about standing out, rather than fitting in.

Nabil Aliffi, Selfridges Digital Fashion Director

Valentino - shirt and trousers / Converse - trainers / Nialaya - dog tag necklace and chain

Fresh prints: Valentino

The powerhouse of print has gone and done it again this season. Alongside the signature camo jackets, tops, trainers, hats (the list goes on)… Valentino has designed some of the most entrancing prints of 2019, from all-out animal to elaborate chinoiserie. What’s more, Undercover’s Jun Takahashi lent his skills to create a series of prints for the catwalk collection, showing that collaboration between designers is now a fundamental part of menswear’s success story (Psst!...Follow @TheYellowDrop to be the first to know when it’s in).

Introducing: Just Don

New-to-Selfridges brand Just Don highlights the major role storytelling plays in menswear today. Founder (and former tour manager for Kanye West, no less) Don C told us: “When creating my collection, I try to share personal experiences such as places I have lived, travelled and memories from my childhood.” With collections grouped into different sporting ‘leagues’ and nods to decades past, Just Don has a distinct and eclectic feel that makes it stand out from the streetwear pack.

I think menswear is changing for the better – the community can enjoy the pillars that have existed for many years, but also new trailblazers that have a unique point of view. No separation; it’s all together and you can mix it up, so individuals can express themselves differently with the same pieces.

Givenchy - windbreaker jacket and bum bag (worn on back)

Go, go Givenchy

Nineties-style taping on your trackies and reflective strips on jackets, trainers (and pretty much anything else) are giving this season’s layers a ‘retro-tech’ feel, and no more so than at Givenchy. Perfect for the shift into autumn (and cycle safety alike), it’s a trend that’s not just a flash in the pan.

Amiri - hoody and shirt / Nialaya - necklace

Amiri’s rebellious streak

Renowned for its irreverent mode of Cali-cool, LA-based Amiri flies the flag for subversive style, with grungy oversized sweats, ripped jeans and nods to skate culture. Its cult popularity is a modern-day menswear phenomenon, showing that street-influenced designer collections – complete with the finest cashmere and denim washes – are redefining the meaning of luxury.

Fendi fire

Time to raise your negronis and shout ‘cin cin' as the Italian powerhouse Fendi has arrived here at selfridges.com. Drawing on its iconic F motif, the technical coats, joggers and track jackets assert a fresh aesthetic for the fashion house that gives a subtle nod to its past while striding confidently into the future (wearing Fendi’s latest Show Fancy trainer, naturally).

Acne Studios - jogging bottoms, windbreaker jacket, trainers (all coming soon) and hoody / Balenciaga - sunglasses (coming soon)

Acne Studios’ subversive styles

From academics to anarchists, Acne Studios’ latest collection is inspired by ‘outsiders from different fields’. With its unexpected melting pot of sportswear detailing and bohemian knits (trust us, it works), this collection tells a story of unity in a time when division is making the headlines.

I wanted to imagine our own counter-cultures which then morph together, with their own ways of living and surviving.
