MOTHER EARTH, I LOVE YOU

We’re celebrating Earth Day with two special odes to the planet created by our future generations and our artist-in-residence Decoy.

As part of SUPERFUTURES at Selfridges – where we’re trying on new lifestyles and experimenting with new ways of being that are kinder on the planet – we called upon two children from our SUPERMARKET launch, Niyah and Theo, to pen a poem to Mother Earth.

The children’s poems were then brought to life by Benjamin (aka Decoy), our current artist-in-residence at Picton Studios, our live-in studio-flat that supports up-and-coming creatives with a six-month-long free tenure in London. His otherworldly digital artworks were a natural fit for our SUPERFUTURES theme, while his collaboration with the children symbolises how creativity, imagination and generations working together will be key in redesigning a future that’s kinder to people and nurtures the planet.

Scroll on to hear from the next generation about their hopes for the future and to discover our top ways to be more planet-friendly under our bold sustainability initiative Project Earth.

ODES TO MOTHER EARTH

Digital artist Decoy visualises Niyah and Theo’s poems and meets the children to hear about their favourite places in nature and what they want to be when they grow up…

Decoy: What springs to mind when you think of planet Earth?

Theo: Planet Earth is the place we live, the place we go to, the place we play and the place we eat.

Decoy: Where’s your most-loved place in nature?

Theo: My most-loved place in nature are parks and the beaches.

Decoy: What is your favourite animal, and why?

Theo: My favourite animal is a dog because they are cute and fluffy.

Theo's handwritten poem
Decoy: What do you think about climate change?

Theo: I think it is bad, some animals will die, the weather will change, and food will disappear.

Decoy: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Theo: I want to be an ambulance paramedic or a firefighter because I can help people.

HOW TO BE MORE PLANET-FRIENDLY AT SELFRIDGES

Since the launch of Project Earth in 2020, we’ve been championing a range of different ways to shop and live that are kinder to the Earth – from buying pre-loved fashion to dining on plant-based delights, discover the top ways to be more earth-conscious at Selfridges.

1) DISCOVER PLANT-BASED FOOD

According to many leading climate scientists, the most impactful way we can reduce our personal carbon footprint is to cut back on meat and dairy products. Our Foodhalls and online are home to an extensive range of delicious plant-based foods, while renowned chef Matthew Kenney’s vegan restaurant Adesse at Selfridges London on 4 offers next-level dining.

2) JOIN THE PRE-LOVED MOVEMENT

From the synthetic fibres made from fossil fuels to the thousands of litres of water used to grow cotton – our clothes use Earth’s precious resources, so one of the most sustainable ways for us to update our wardrobes is by shopping pre-loved. RESELFRIDGES is our curated edit of extraordinary vintage, upcycled and pre-loved fashion and accessories from brands including 1/OFF Paris and PRADA.

3) EXPLORE OUR PROJECT EARTH EDIT

To help you navigate the complex world of sustainability, look out for our five product labels (For Vegans, For Animals, For Nature, For Communities and Better Ways to Shop) that make shopping earth-consciously a whole lot easier. Take your pick from vegan and cruelty-free beauty products to brands working with pioneering materials such as Viron boots made from leftover apple skins and reclaimed plastic sunnies by Clean Waves.

4) RENT FASHION WITH US

To help us with our mission to close the loop on fashion waste, discover Selfridges Rental and transform not just your look but the way you think about, shop for, and find joy in fashion. From new-to-you designer pieces from the latest SS22 collections to next-level accessories, take fashion for a spin without the commitment whether you’re going to an event or want to elevate your everyday wardrobe.

5) GIVE YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE A PLASTIC-DETOX

Annually the beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging globally, with 79% ending up in landfills according to a 2019 study by Zero Waste Week. Be part of the solution by refilling your beauty products in store with us – from make-up by Charlotte Tilbury to skincare by YSL and fragrance by Le Labo all refillable (to name a few).

6) REPAIR FASHION AND ACCESSORIES WITH US

As Orsola de Castro Fashion Revolution’s Co-founder has always said “the most sustainable garment is the one already in your wardrobe”. Whether you’re looking to revive (or even change) the colour of your favourite heels, fix jewellery or have your trainers buffed, painted and re-soled, our repairs specialists are on hand to make your most-loved items feel like new.
