TAKE 10

Out-there outerwear

Out-there outerwear

Words: Nana Baah

It’s cold dark, cold and rainy, so why not brighten up the days with your choice of outerwear? We’ve rounded up 10 of our favourite men’s winter coats to keep you toasty all season long.

1: POWER DRESSING

Wales Bonner Harmonic checked cashmere-blend coat

The late, great American jazz trumpeter Don Cherry inspired ‘Togetherness’, Wales Bonner’s AW22 collection. Cherry was a pioneer of world-fusion music, something that’s mirrored in Grace Wales Bonner’s mission to fuse “Afro-Atlantic with European luxury”. The Harmonic coat pays homage to Jazz-Age style with its relaxed tailoring and subtle pop of colour.

2: NEON SHOWERS

Rains Ultralight shell anorak

Since its debut in 2012, Rains has cemented itself as the creator of the most reliable waterproof jackets. You might be expecting Scandi minimalism from the Copenhagen-born brand, but the neon-green shade means this raincoat is the opposite of low-key. Grab one for Glastonbury next year and your friends will be able to keep sight of you – for once.

3: COSY CLUB

Tommy Hilfiger x Martine Rose oversized towelling coat

Martine Rose is known for creations with a surreal element, so it’s no surprise that she’s pushing cosy dressing as far as it can go. Part of the 90s-inspired Tommy Hilfiger x Martine Rose collaboration, this oversized robe is about as cosy as it gets. Just remember to put an equally comfy outfit on underneath before you head out.

4: (EM)BRACE THE COLD

Canada Goose padded recycled-nylon jacket

Making the coldest temperatures in the world feel (almost) bearable, Canada Goose designs the warmest winter coats going. Lightweight and packable, this jacket is the easy choice for ski holidays, busy Christmas shopping trips in the city, cold walks in the countryside – we could go on. Plus, it’s made from recycled nylon to reduce waste. A win-win.

5: FEELING REFLECTIVE

Dries Van Noten metallic bomber jacket

Who says men’s jackets can’t be fun? Dries Van Noten is known for adding personality to everyday pieces. For AW22, the designer reimagined classic silhouettes, keeping the traditional bomber shape but switching it up with a crinkly metallic-silver outer layer. This is one for the magpies among us – it might get dark at 3pm now, but you’ll still be seen streets away.

6: BACK TO BLACK

Carhartt WIP organic-cotton chore coat

Carhartt has been crafting workwear for more than 100 years, so you know this chore jacket is engineered to last. This simple black version will, let’s be honest, look great whichever way you style it. Carhartt crafts it from organic cotton, so it’s part of our Project Earth edit. Planet-friendly and an instant classic? You couldn’t ask for more.

7: MODERN MINIMALISM

Bottega Veneta double-breasted coat

Thanks to decades honing construction techniques, Bottega Veneta has mastered the art of minimalism. Exaggerated lapels and a curved hem make this coat a perfect example of what goes into making something simple and beautiful. Double-lined and double-breasted, it’s timeless and warm enough that you’ll be reaching for it for many winters to come.

8: TRACK STAR

Marine Serre contrast-panel relaxed-fit recycled polyester-blend jacket

Marine Serre has built her reputation on bold moon prints and an unwavering approach to sustainability, with most of her last collection made from upcycled fabric. This sports performance-inspired jacket marries the two: it’s stitched from recycled polyester and signs off with a single moon motif on the back. Wear it to a casual weekend lunch and you’ll look like you ran there, even if you just hopped off the Tube.

9: WEATHER IT OUT

Moncler shell hooded windbreaker jacket

Moncler celebrated its 70th anniversary with performers clad in special Moncler puffers at the Piazza del Duomo during Milan Fashion Week. Designed with decades of know-how when it comes to dealing with harsh weather in the French Alps, this jacket keeps the elements out. The flashes of yellow are made for brightening up grey days, too.

10: TOP LAYERS

FOG x ESSENTIALS 1977-print boxy-fit jacket

From jeans to jackets, oversized silhouettes dominated this season’s runways. Add to that Fear of God’s signature muted colour palette, and you have a jacket that taps into trends without being bound by them. Simple and understated, with a nod to the brand’s founder on the back, this jacket is great for layering. Layer it over joggers and a white T-shirt for a more casual ‘fit this winter.
