TOP 10 BEAUTY DISCOVERIES YOU NEED TO KNOW

Words: Grace Gargini

Want to give your make-up bag a refresh? Or in need of some beauty inspo? I hear you. As we head into September – a time I will forever associate with stocking up on fresh notebooks and gel pens ahead of the new school year – it feels only natural to take stock, hit refresh and welcome new products, and good practices, into our beauty routines. So, here I round up the very best of Selfridges beauty this month – from the most exciting (and exclusive) make-up launches to our Project Earth planet-friendly finds – and even the facial workout everyone needs to try.

Inspired by the legendary 90s supermodels, Charlotte Tilbury’s latest collection is all about ‘cool girl make-up’, with brand new palettes, eye liners and lipsticks – think glowing skin, matte nude lips and natural smoky eyes in buildable formulas that will easily slot into your make-up routine. Very Kate-Moss-meets-Brigitte-Bardot.

After almost two years of face coverings, many of us have neglected our lipsticks and opted for more low-key balms instead. But as we venture back into the world, it’s time to dust off our more refined (read: fancy) wardrobe and products. My favourite lipsticks of the moment offer vivid, pigmented colour but also comfort, thanks to next-gen formulas that contain nourishing oils – so you needn’t compromise on either.

You may have spotted this Instagram favourite pop-up on your feed thanks to Jess Hunt, the founder and force behind new make-up brand REFY. The brand’s mission is to redefine beauty with high-quality products that are all about enhancing your natural beauty. The brow products are its most recognisable and popular – the Brow Sculpt, Pomade and Pencil kits allow you to transform from natural groomed brows to exaggerated, fuller creations. I’m also a big fan of the dewy cream bronzers and blushers that can be applied with fingers in a rush, or with its ultra-soft Duo Brush if you’ve a bit more time on your hands.

There’s no denying a perky flush of colour to the cheeks can totally transform your complexion. Trust me, the next time you look in the mirror and think, ‘wow, I look knackered’, reach for a blusher. These gorgeous blushes from Pat McGrath come in an array of colours – from soft pink to vibrant coral (which look particularly beautiful on darker skin tones). The silky formula contains a fine, light-reflecting shimmer and bucket-loads of pigment, so you can build from a light dusting to a more intense colour.

Ask any make-up artist and they’ll tell you the secret to good make-up is all about layering. Rather than relying on a heavy-handed application of one product, layering product allows you to build textures and pigment while keeping a more natural effect. Enter Bobbi Brown’s new primer: a radiance-boosting formula that preps and energises the skin ahead of your foundation. And for an extra glow boost post-foundation, Dior’s illuminating powder gives a sun-kissed sheen to the top of cheeks.

After quitting her job and retraining as a health and wellness coach, Valérie Grandury founded Odacité in a quest to find pure, plant-based formulas with healing properties for the skin. Her range of organic, cruelty-free products blend concentrated oils that work to correct specific skin concerns – from clogged pores to pigmentation – without compromising the skin’s natural balance.

2020 may go down in the make-up world as ‘the year of the eye’ which, thankfully, has led to exciting new palettes to play with. Two new, limited-edition palettes which have caught my eye are Dior’s opulent, jewel-toned creation from its Birds of a Feather collection, and the Metallic Denim Quad from Tom Ford. The taupe colours give a chic wash of colour over the lid and the shimmering navy blue and black shades are perfect for evenings out (think Studio 54 vibes).

New (and inclusive) hair brand

BREAD – Hair-oil: Everyday Gloss

Specialising in textured, curly and afro hair, Bread’s line of bespoke hair care quickly attracted devoted fans. Aside from its chic packaging, its gentle, cruelty-free formulas range from a milky hair cleanser and creamy deep conditioner to a versatile hair oil. Its oil contains a mash-up of superfruit extracts, such as Kakadu plum (rich in vitamin C), and nourishing oils, to deeply hydrate the hair and leave it with a lightweight yet glossy veil.

The treatment to try

FaceGym at Selfridges London

If you haven’t already experienced a trip to FaceGym, I urge you to get involved. This is not what I call a ‘strokey, strokey facial’ – no, this is a high-intensity workout for your face with real results. They call it a ‘workout’ for good reason – it combines strong muscle manipulation techniques with EMS technology for powerful face sculpting that stimulates circulation and improves lymphatic drainage. I recently had the Clean + Lift workout and after 30 minutes I could see a real difference to my skin – it looked visibly lifted and dewier than it had done for months.
