WHAT’S BIG IN BEAUTY FOR 2022?

Words: Grace Gargini and Anna Heaton

We’re looking ahead to the big ideas, product launches and trends that we’re most excited about in 2022. From characterful scents to innovative wellbeing gadgets, earth-conscious products and smile-inducing make-up – read on to discover what will be filling up your beauty shelf in the coming months.

DO-GOOD BEAUTY

Given how embedded beauty is in our identity and personality, it’s little surprise we gravitate towards brands that reflect our own values. Championing labels that do their bit for people and planet is something we will continue to do through 2022 and beyond, and next year you can expect even more exciting new additions to our ever-growing roster of Project Earth beauty brands. Taking the top shelf of earth-conscious essentials are: REN, whose bestselling products are not only clean but have been re-packaged in post-consumer recycled plastic; Biossance, the first ever brand to use vegan squalene (coined squalane), meaning no sharks are killed at the expense of scientifically backed skincare with serious results; Milk Makeup, who made fully cruelty-free and vegan make-up formulas a firm fixture in our beauty bags, and Hourglass with its first vegan and cruelty-free red lipstick.

If you’re looking for brands that do good for communities, luxury, vegan and earth-conscious fragrance house, Sana Jardin, who have an upskilling initiative for female ingredient pickers, or nurse-founded Nursem, which donates money to NHS nurses for every hand cream sold, are just a couple of our favourites.

PRODUCTS WITH HIDDEN BENEFITS

The combination of our dialled-up approach to skincare and our unequivocal excitement at the return of make-up has raised the bar when it comes to a product’s performance and versatility. For 2022, brands are upping their game with innovative hybrid products that do more than meet the eye. Think: every-coverage foundations with skincare benefits and protective SPF, and pigmented lip shades that are pumped with hydration-boosting ingredients. Our favourites include By Terry’s infused-with-Hyaluronic-Acid Hydra range; Hourglass’ sheer lip colour packed with nourishing oils; and Westman Atelier’s perfect collection of multi-purpose sticks which can be used on cheeks, lips and eyes for a subtle-yet-impactful beauty look. Win-win.

MAXIMALIST FRAGRANCE

Mirroring make-up’s renewed sense of creativity (more on that later), fragrance houses have adopted a similar approach for 2022 with larger-than-life scents that demand attention. Take Byredo’s latest perfume, Mumbai Noise, which is inspired by the bustling, incense-filled streets of Chembut. Notes of bitter coffee, leather, sweet tonka beans and davana herb create a complex scent that’s both warming and inviting. The people-stopping Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle blends Turkish rose, patchouli, blackcurrant and sensual sandalwood to create a feminine but modern scent. Packing a fragrant punch, Baccarat Rouge 540 is a potent, sparkling scent filled with radiant saffron, jasmine, woody amber and freshly cut cedar that’s bound to sit proudly atop every nightstand next year. Brands are also indulging us with eye-catching designs, too – with artistic ornamental bottles from brands such as Penhaligon’s and Inito to LOEWE’s chic and gorgeously scented centrepiece candlesticks.

WELLNESS 2.0: WHERE SCIENCE MEETS SELF-CARE

We’re looking at wellness through a new lens for 2022, going beyond the obvious health and wellbeing clichés and instead exploring the most innovative and progressive ideas. Alongside the more typical relaxation products such as a calming bath oil, we’ll be investing in the latest innovation, including gadgets such as massage tools like the Dr. Vali Cutis and ingestibles that boost beauty from within.

This new generation of science-backed ingestibles is designed to support everything from a vitamin deficiency and gut health to a collagen-boosted complexion, so you can easily tailor them to your individual needs. On our list? The much-coveted Hair + Energy formula by cult Australian brand, JS Health and award-winning Skin Accumax™ by Advance Nutrition Programme, whose – according to their Head of Nutrition, Lorrain Perretta – unique patented formulation helps to clarify and clear the complexion naturally with synergised vitamins A, C, E with a plant compound found in cruciferous vegetables. “Synergy is key to supplementation. All the vitamins and minerals in your body work together…Therefore, it is important to ensure that the body has a good variety of all the nutrients needed, and we can support optimum levels in the body with supplements, which then in turn are able to target specific skin concerns, explains” Lorrain Perretta.

New research, new ingredients (and ingredient synergies), updated ways of packaging capsules and pioneering research into areas such as gut care makes the supplements sphere a hub of innovation. Synergy is key to supplementation. All the vitamins and minerals in your body work together…Therefore, it is important to ensure that the body has a good variety of all the nutrients needed, and we can support optimum levels in the body with supplements, which then in turn are able to target specific skin concerns.”

MOOD-BOOSTING MAKE-UP

If ever was a time when we needed a mood-lifting boost, now has to be it. And what better than the glorious escapism of make-up? Our unbridled love of make-up and the joyous creativity it brings was rekindled with SS22 Fashion Week. The shows mirrored our appetite for freedom and fun with an abundance of cheery colour – neon slicked eyes and statement blush – and playful textures including Y2K high-gloss lips and chrome finishes. The shows forecast that 2022 will be a year of experimentation and individuality, with artful palettes, bold colours, long-wear statement lips and new textures playing key roles for the year ahead. What better way to ring in the new year?
