HAIR HEROES FOR EVERY HAIR TYPE

Fine, flat hair? Frizzy curls? Dry and damaged? Whatever your hair type, we share the tips and products you need to ensure a good hair day is always on the cards.

Now that our beloved salons are back (yay!) the confidence-boosting effect of a ‘good hair day’ is within reach once again. But, away from the salon chair, mastering your locks and finding the right products for your hair type isn’t always easy. Your products and your hair need to talk the same language.

So, to find the right routine for you, we’ve broken down the products you need by hair type so you can be sure to find the perfect match – from the hairspray that transforms limp locks to Bridget Bardot levels of va-va-voom to the salon-approved treatments thatֹ’ll restore dry, rainbow-coloured styles.

Our top picks, by hair type

FOR FINE / FLAT HAIR

The secret to bolstering fine, flat hair is finding products that will clean and condition but won’t weigh down strands that tend to be oil-prone. Enter: Virtue with its Full Shampoo and Conditioner that’s enriched with Alpha Keratin 60ku – a protein that’s identical to natural keratin found in the hair. This wonder ingredient directly binds to damaged follicles to repair them without weighing you down. A lather with these two and you’ll wave goodbye to limp locks and say hello to lightweight body.

When it comes to styling, opt for a strand-boosting spray, like this one from Oribe that also offers heat protection. Simply spritz into damp hair before drying for root lift and bounciness. A tip I picked up from my hairdresser: blow-dry your hair upside down in intermittent spurts to create extra volume at the roots – it really works! And for ultimate Kate Moss-effortless-texture vibes, Sam McKnight’s genius Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist does exactly what it says on the tin.

FOR THICK / DRY HAIR

If you’re wrestling with dry, lacklustre hair, you need to inject some serious nourishment into your strands. Proving hydration isn’t always the job of a conditioner, Dizziak’s Hydration Wash is packed with conditioning and protective oils – from shea and coconut to aloe – to clean and condition all hair types, including very dry or textured hair. Hair whisperer and founder of OUAI Jen Atkin has created product lines that are bespoke to hair types, and this Thick Hair Treatment Masque can be used once a week to deliver major moisture, repair damage and seal split ends for noticeable shine.

Regardless of your hair type, Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Oil is a brilliant multitasker. Enriched with sustainably sourced Mirsalehi honey – a natural humectant that helps to maintain moisture – it can be used before styling to protect and eliminate frizz, after styling for a hit of glossy shine, or even as a leave-in mask to nourish and repair damage caused by heat or bleach. Plus, the scent alone and chic glass bottle are heavenly.

FOR CURLY / WAVY HAIR

Those with curly hair will tell you there are many intricacies within this blanket term, and so often routines need to be catered to varying curls. So, Living Proof has created a three-step system that allows you to choose a conditioning styler and booster depending on your hair type and desired style – from enhancing waves and defining curls to elongating coils. Its creamy Curl Shampoo and Conditioner is powered with its Healthy Curl Complex to cleanse and condition for weightless detangling.

Once out of the shower, you need to get a pre-styling curling cream on wet hair to encourage and enhance its natural shape. Be Curly by Aveda is a classic – the vegan botanical-infused formula intensifies curls and combats frizz while boosting shine.

FOR COLOUR-TREATED / DAMAGED HAIR

Yes, we all love transforming our hair and living out our celebrity hair fantasies (mine is, and will always be, the ‘bronde’ queen Jennifer Aniston) but years of regular colouring can lead to damage, split ends and dehydration. So, to do your best to restore it to its former glory, use a heat-protecting spray, like this one from Gisou, to hydrate and protect from further damage. You may have spotted Olaplex as an add-on service at your local salon in recent years, but did you know you can reap its rewards at home, too? Its cult No. 3 Hair Perfector is a pre-shampoo treatment that works deep into your strands to repair broken bonds caused by chemical and thermal damage to strengthen and restore your locks.

And when it comes to preserving your colour between trips to the salon, an array of brands offer dedicated shampoo and conditioners to enhance your chosen shade, such as Oribe’s Bright Blonde Shampoo, which adds luminosity to blondes while banishing brassiness.

FOR AFRO / TEXTURED HAIR

Afro or textured hair comes with its fair share of complexities – from deciding how you want to style it (natural, kinky, straightened, etc) to finding the right formula for your hair and curl type. Thankfully, there’s a number of brilliant female black-owned brands that offer hard-working formulas that specialise in afro hair.

“I created Bouclème out a desire to have healthy, frizz-free curls,” explains founder Michele Scott-Lynch, who created the brand in an effort to empower her two girls to embrace theirs. “I began to appreciate the beauty of curls in my 30s, before that I battled against them... I needed to be a role model for them to see the beauty in having a head full of curls.” From its hydrating non-foaming Curl Cleanser to the award-winning Intensive Moisture Treatment, its all-natural formulas strengthen and enhance all types of curl. Next up, Dizziak; the brainchild of former Beauty Contributor for Stylist Loretta De Feo, who founded the brand after an age-old quest for the ultimate deeply nourishing hair care line that would work for her Nigerian afro hair. This Deep Conditioner is packed with quinoa protein and an array of nourishing oils to fight frizz, stimulate follicle growth and increase elasticity (without weighing it down). And when it comes to treating coarse or damaged afro hair, this Khalila Oil is a powerhouse of rich oils, broccoli seed and watermelon extracts that strengthens and seals in moisture – it can also be used as a leave-in hot oil treatment for hair that needs a little TLC.
