Let’s explore: The House by Daniel Arsham

South-facing, off-street parking and with a rather impressive view of Oxford Street, London: The House by Daniel Arsham has taken over our ever-changing Corner Shop space this Christmas. And yep – it’s our new dream home.

Inspired by our Future Fantasy Christmas campaign – where we’re celebrating a thoroughly modern take on the festive season – artist and fashion favourite Daniel Arsham has reimagined the typical family home (and the everyday home goods it’s filled with), to represent the distant future of 3019. What’s more, there are a whole host of exclusive fashion collections and items just ready to delight us folks still residing in 2019. So, fancy a little look around our ultra-modern new pad? Step right in…

Meet Daniel Arsham

Daniel Arsham is a visual artist and architect based in New York, who has collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Adidas and Dior. His work revolves around the concept of archaeology and time erosion – taking familiar, everyday objects and transforming them to create otherworldly artefacts that could have been discovered on a geological dig decades from now.  This isn’t his first brush with the big yellow shop: Daniel’s studio Snarkitecture worked with us to create our brilliant KITH space earlier this year.

THE FRONT YARD

Welcome, welcome – but mind the motor in the driveway, won’t you? It’s a seriously classic 2020 Porsche 992, complete with custom ARSHAM 3019 plates. They don’t make them like they used to…

“I’ve always wanted to create a functional car that was degraded and eroded, but was still driveable,” says Daniel. “We took the entire thing apart and recast all of the sections… trying to piece that whole thing back together was crazy.”

THE CLOSET

It wouldn’t be a spectacular Selfridges Corner Shop takeover without some particularly brilliant exclusives to take home. Step into Daniel’s wardrobe and rifle through our exclusive sportswear collaborations with A-Cold-Wall* and Ambush, as well as fantastically futuristic Daniel Arsham x Selfridges tote bags, and iPhone covers and goodies from Dior and Byredo.

“I’ve always taken an approach with my work to try and reach audiences that are somewhat out of the typical art-viewing crowd,” says Daniel. “It’s about placing artwork in a context that’s unexpected and something people wouldn’t typically find in a place like Selfridges.”

KITCHEN & LIVING ROOM

The open kitchen and living room is a place where we can sit, unwind and enjoy company – especially at Christmas time – and in 3019, nothing much has changed. Lounge on the couch, take out a beer from that classic ice-white Smeg Fridge (that’s stuffed to the brim with festive treats) and, while you admire the Seletti baubles on the twinkling Christmas tree, think about what you might cook for dinner… Heinz Cream of Tomato soup, anyone?

“Step into the living room: I’ve designed the furniture, the lighting, the architecture; whether it’s this Smeg fridge or a Bang & Olufsen speaker, it’s about really filling out this universe,” says Daniel. “Everything, from the basketball hoop that’s hanging on the wall to a Cream of Tomato soup with Heinz (along with all the packaging design), is located within the future.”

The SELETTI X SNARKITECTURE Christmas Collection

Italian design company, Seletti, has collaborated with Daniel Arsham’s studio, Snarkitecture, to create a collection of Christmas decorations in Arsham’s signature eroded style. Your Christmas tree will never have looked so fashion-forward.

THE OFFICE

A thousand years from now, the sanctuary of a quiet, peaceful place to think and work remains. In Daniel’s House, the office space feels like familiar territory: the desk, potted plant and bookshelf are all conducive to a good working environment, but come with a little twist. The old-school Apple PowerBook is a reminder of technology’s development since its launch in the early 90s, while the crystallised Vogue cover feels like a time-capsule artefact. Just remember to stay hydrated as you work – Arsham Studio’s exclusive S’Well bottle will do the trick.

“Something that may have been plastic or metal has now been reformed in volcanic ash or crystal,” explains Daniel. “In that way, there’s this kind of dislocation in time for the viewer.”
