25 November 2020
Dear Gift Guider,
Over the past few months, I’ve been doing my bit to be more planet-friendly. I took part in Secondhand September, I’ve cut back on my single-use plastics, and I’ve started refilling some of my favourite beauty products. (Go, me!) … But, with Christmas coming up, I’m worried I’m going to be undoing all of the sustainable steps I’ve been taking. I’ve got so many gifts to buy, wrap and send, but I don’t want to harm the planet in the process. What can I do?
From,
Confused at Christmas

Dear Confused at Christmas,
Yep, Christmas 2020 is going to be a bit different this year, so the last thing we all need piled up on our plates is the added worry we’re doing the planet a disservice with our present-buying. (I’d rather save space for more roast potatoes, thanks.) On the heels of our Project Earth campaign, our teams have been working hard to make Christmas gifting a far eco-friendlier experience this year. Contrary to popular belief, sustainable presents do not have to mean wrapping up a pair of hand-knitted hemp socks (unless that’s what they’ve asked for, of course); from British-made and forest-friendly chocolates to luxury vintage accessories, there’s a truckload of brilliant options out there to make your Christmas gifts as planet-friendly as possible – just scroll on and see…
Yours,
The Gift Guider (aka Selfridges Editor Charlotte Core)

DISCOVER THE PROJECT EARTH GIFT EDIT

We’re not ones to brag here at Selfridges, but our more sustainable gifting options are completely brilliant – and easier than ever to spot in store and online with the help of Project Earth labelling (just look out for the green tag symbol online or the swing tags in store). Givenchy's Antigona tote bag, created from responsible leather, Le Labo's cult-favourite refillable fragrances and Alighieri’s unique British-made jewellery pieces are just a few gifts I’d love to receive that are truly extraordinary, with their earth-conscious credentials an added – and amazing – bonus.

PRE-LOVED (AND PRETTY AMAZING) GIFTS

Need something truly knock-their-socks-off special (and earth-conscious)? Look no further than RESELLFRIDGES. The line-up of pre-loved luxury vintage accessories – from cult-favourite bags (hello Celine tote bag, you’re now on my wish list), through to Chanel silk scarves and dazzling jewellery pieces – will seriously wow them. Plus, by purchasing something pre-loved, you’re helping to close the loop on unnecessary landfill waste. Win-win.

PLANET-FRIENDLY BEAUTY GIFTS

For the person in your life who loves a bit of beauty, but not the waste or harm it can cause, recyclable, refillable and vegan beauty products are an excellent way to gift more sustainably this year. Take it from Selfridges Beauty Editor Grace Gargini (who also moonlights as my personal skincare and make-up mentor, on-call 24/7 for every beauty question and dilemma), who’s tackling her gift list differently for Christmas 2020. “I want to buy friends and family beauty treats that are kinder to our planet,” says Grace. “I’ll be treating my mum to a lovely scented candle courtesy of the British makers at Floral Street, and some Milk Makeup goodies for my friends.”

DELICIOUS (AND EARTH-CONSCIOUS) FOODIE GIFTS

If you’re searching for delicious – and planet-friendly – presents that’ll impress even the most discerning of foodies, the Selfridges Foodhall’s stuffed to the brim with gourmet gifts. I’ve been making a concerted effort to switch to more vegan options, and the Selfridges Selection vegan salted caramel and chocolate panettone is exactly what I’d love to receive this Christmas, while forest-friendly sweets and chocolates will make for some seriously tasty stocking fillers. For friends and family members that enjoy a good cuppa, Newby Teas' Jasmine Rose tea is just the ticket, and will look great on their kitchen shelf. (Note: best served with a huge wedge of Selfridges Selection vegan figgy pudding.)
