THE SELFRIDGES GUIDE TO

THE NEW SEASON

When did September happen? Well, reality check, it has (eek), which means our evolutionary instinct to kit ourselves out for the new school term season has well and truly kicked in. As always, we're here to help: here’s what to wear for the next six months, and beyond.

Rejina Pyo – jacket / A.F. Vandevorst – top / Ann Demeulemeester – trousers

The must-own material: velvet

Good news, your velvet treasures from last season are still as valuable as ever.

What’s new for AW17? Traditional jewel-like tones are joined by sweet shades of marshmallow pink, sherbet yellow and bubblegum blue, making us feel like kids in a candy store.

Your go-to designers: Rejina Pyo, Etro, Galvan

Selfridges says: Fancy a stroke?

Shop velvet

Givenchy – blouse, skirt and boots

///

The key colour: red

It was a colourful season, so choosing just one standout shade wasn't easy. But when Givenchy unveiled its entirely crimson collection (to mark the end of Riccardo Tisci’s 12-year tenure as creative director), we knew we had a winner.

Your go-to designers: Givenchy, Gucci, Victoria Beckham

Selfridges says: It’s the ultimate power hue, so accessorise with your most fearless attitude. And maybe an apple or two.

Alexandre Vauthier – jumpsuit / Marni – boots (available in store)

///

The key influence: luxury streetwear

The gap between streetwear and luxury fashion has long been closing, and this season, the relationship took a more glamorous turn, as sporty eveningwear, souped-up tracksuits and embellished bombers ruled the runways.

Your go-to designers: Alexandre Vauthier, Off-White, Vetements

Selfridges says: New-to-Selfridges label Alexandre Vauthier is our buyers' top tip for world domination

Rosie Assoulin - top and skirt

///

The big statement: sculptural shapes

Designers turned up the volume this season, experimenting with architectural lines and deconstructed shapes. The bigger the better.

Your go-to designers: Rosie Assoulin, Maticevski, Ellery

Selfridges says: Why reserve high-drama looks for evenings only? We say, make a scene at work in giant ruffles.

Shop sculptural shapes

Calvin Klein – leather jacketturtleneck top, floral skirt (coming soon) and transparent dress (available in store)

///

The standout collection: Calvin Klein

Raf Simons’ highly anticipated first collection for Calvin Klein sent us all aflutter. The varsity jackets, Wall Street suiting and structured double denim paid tribute to the brand’s all-American roots, while the deconstructed knits and glossy transparent layers marked a fresh new era for the label.

Selfridges says: We defy you to show us a more perfect leather jacket than this.

Shop Calvin Klein

Junya Watanabe – tartan dresspatchwork skirt, long-sleeved string top and leggings (coming soon)

///

The print of the season: tartan

Autumn/winter calls for a good checked print, and this season, traditional tartan goes wild. Don’t be afraid to mix your prints and experiment with avant-garde shapes; you know your inner anarchist wants to…

Your go-to designers: Junya Watanabe, Balmain, Loewe

Selfridges says: Kilts are key. Sporrans optional.

Shop tartan

Dries Van Noten – velvet blazer and cropped top / Toga Pulla - shirt / Antonio Berardi – trousers

///

The updated classic: the casual tux

Suiting is back in the spotlight for AW17, and this time it’s all about relaxed silhouettes and lots of velvet. Opt for Frame’s velvet leopard-print tux, if you dare…

Your go-to designers: Dries Van Noten, Racil, Stella McCartney

Selfridges says: Mismatched or worn together, the casual tux unlocks so many outfit options, we reckon we could live in it all week.

Shop suiting

Attico – sequined robe dress / Ann Demeulemeester - top (worn underneath)

///

The hero item: the robe dress

The nonchalance of a robe, the glamour of a dress. If you just buy one thing this season, make it this.

Your go-to designers: Attico, Co and Diane von Furstenberg

Selfridges says: What does Mariah Carey wear when she gets out of the shower? We bet it looks a bit like this sequined number from Attico – our top pick of the season.
