Inspiring Change

The Conscious Creators at Selfridges

In celebration of this year’s London Design Festival, we’ve picked our top designers whose products have been made with sustainable and ethical trading in mind – while looking pretty great, too.

Better for people and the planet

We love beautiful designs that also have a positive impact on the communities that produce them. Case in point: Dassie Artisan, whose African handmade bamboo bowls are made using only locally sourced materials. Sharing similar values, London-based pattern pioneers Patternity have collaborated with Zambian hand-painting artisans Tribal Textiles to make an exclusive collection of printed textiles, from which a percentage of its sales go to supporting rural education programmes and conservation initiatives. Good for the home and good for the soul.

Say no to single-use plastic

At Selfridges we’re passionate about fighting plastic waste – we removed all single-use plastic water bottles and plastic carrier bags from sale at Selfridges back in 2015 and fizzy drinks bottles this year – so this collection of reusable products ticks all our boxes. From taking lunch to work in a stylish Elephant Box (these stainless steel food containers are sustainably sourced and eco-friendly) to sipping your morning coffee from Kinto’s colourful travel tumblers (instead of takeaway cups) and using reusable (and recyclable) storage containers (which also look chic on your shelves), you can join us and take on the fight by swapping your plastics for these more sustainable options.

A sustainable love story

Sustainably produced products for the home needn’t be bland or overly earnest – and no one said they couldn’t be totally colourful, too. Take the innovators at Pentatonic, who turn discarded ocean plastic into something soft and eminently snuggly in the form of cushions emblazoned with the term ‘TRASH’. Lounging on the sofa with a couple of these puts a whole new spin on a guilt-free duvet day. Meanwhile, plastic-recycling gurus Ecopixel have come up with a stylish reworking of the simple (but, well, vital) wine cooler. And you can chill out about your social impact too, especially when enjoying your favourite vintage from British Colour Standard’s recycled bubble glassware.
