Join us as we look ahead to the future of Project Earth – from a preview of exciting and responsible new ways to shop, to our ambitious commitments for the future – and share a special note of thanks to you, our partners and our teams for being part of the journey so far.

On 17 August, the words ‘Let’s Change the Way We Shop’ were emblazoned across our London store and website, signalling the launch of Project Earth and a call to arms for us all to come together and create a more sustainable future.

Over the past 12 weeks, your actions have spoken even louder than those four-metre tall words pinned to our building. Against the backdrop of the many hardships that the global pandemic has brought, many of us have sought out ways to reimagine and reset our lifestyles for a brighter future. You have rented your clothes, sold or repaired your pre-loved bags, refilled your fragrances, created earth-conscious recipes and joined us to debate the future of shopping with leading environmentalists, designers and more.

And yet we all know that there is so much more that can still be done. This is just the beginning. So, as we seek to experiment and explore even further, and look towards our ambitious commitments for the future, we’re sending out a heartfelt thank you for joining us at the start of this ground-breaking journey.

Out of the global pandemic has come an understanding of how fragile and complex our systems are, but also how our planet and people can benefit if we act collectively with a shared purpose. Now, more than ever, we must double down on our efforts to reinvent retail with sustainability at its heart.

One of the biggest ways we’ve changed the way we shop is through, well, giving you a way not to. With HURR Collective, you can now rent that perfect dress or coveted accessory without adding another item to your wardrobe. With over 300 of you having rented items so far, the rental revolution is just beginning…

Our RESELLFRIDGES sellers took over the Corner Shop at Selfridges London

The RESELLFRIDGES sellers who took over our Corner Shop this year – from founder of Vout Vintage Ruthie Vout and her accessible vintage finds, to Dukes Cupboard’s cult pre-loved streetwear styles – showed us all that buying pre-loved isn’t just a great way to close the loop on waste, but possibly the greatest way to curate your own, individual wardrobe. Apart from seeking out a (not so) new wardrobe treasure with us, you can also sell your pre-loved accessories with us for Selfridges store credit. Yes, the circular economy is here to stay.

FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER

We’ll continue to expand our RESELLFRIDGES edit with more options, from vintage style steals to luxury accessories. At Selfridges London, we’ll also launch a pre-loved bags edit in our Accessories Hall and will continue to collaborate with the leading names in vintage to bring exclusive access to some of the world’s greatest fashion archives…

Changing the way we shop is, of course, not just about how we shop, but what we’re shopping for. Navigating the complexities of what is (and isn’t) made more sustainably can be difficult – especially when you throw in the fact that we want the products we buy to be as stylish or high-performing as others out there (because, why wouldn’t we?). However, thanks to the creativity and innovation of leading design houses, upcoming brands, food makers and beauty innovators, you can now shop better than ever before – perhaps without even realising it. Our Project Earth labelling also helps you to discover the best organic, vegan, forest-friendly (and more) products out there, with the options growing week by week…

As part of launching Project Earth, we are delighted to have forged new connections with leading charities and names in sustainability – all of which have helped guide and challenge us on our sustainability journey, both as part of our 13 live-streamed events (watched by over 150,000 of you) and shaping our commitments for the future. From supporting the Woodland Trust in its mission to reforest parts of the UK with in-store donations, to hearing the inspirational words of Aja Barber, Clover Hogan and Farhana Yamin during our events – the conversation has only just begun…

HERE'S TO CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION...

We’ll continue to host the conversations and collaborate with our partners, seeking new ways to challenge and change mindsets around sustainability. You can also subscribe to our podcast, ‘How to Lead a Sustainable Business’, hosted by Selfridges Group Chairman Alannah Weston, in which she speaks to inspiring thought leaders at the forefront of sustainability.

From the earth-conscious products we sell to our windows designed with recycled and planet-positive materials, all our teams – from the shop floor to behind the scenes – have come together to help transform the world of Selfridges. Sustainability has become part of our everyday – from the Green Warriors community who come up with new ideas to help us move forward (for example, recycling coffee cups to make our yellow bags), to our buyers who champion the sustainability conversation with our brands. We know there’s still so much more that can be done and explored, but Project Earth is something we are all proud to be part of, and we are dedicated to meeting our future commitments with our signature Selfridges creativity.
