THE BEAUTY INSIDER:
WHAT IS YOUR FRAGRANCE PERSONALITY?

Finding a new signature scent isn't always easy - not only do we want it to smell sensational, but our fragrance should say something about us, too. So, to save you spending days agonising in our Fragrance Hall, we've enlisted the help of our beauty buyer, Adella Family, to reveal the best fragrance (most of which work for men and women) for every personality. The question is: which one are you?

The romantic

You are:
Passionate and elegant, with a penchant for bygone glamour and an appreciation of luxury.

You like:
Lush florals, powdery notes, and comforting, sweet aromas such as vanilla and amber.

We suggest:
Roses are known for being one of the most romantic notes - and Clive Christian's Green Floral eau de parfum (exclusive to Selfridges) is arguably our most beloved rose fragrance of all time. Unlike others, it has a soft but not overtly feminine aroma, meaning men can wear it just as easily as women.

For:
Women and men.

The calm and collected

You are:
Quietly confident and just a little bit mysterious; predisposed to solitude over the spotlight.

You like:
Classic woody notes like patchouli and sandalwood blended with other notes such as vanilla or musk to give an unexpected edge.

We suggest:
Formulated with white rum, By Kilian's Straight to Heaven perfume infuses spicy nutmeg with the rich, woody notes of Indonesian patchouli oil, smooth vanilla and white musk.

For:
Women and men.

The traditionalist

You are:
Nostalgic and sentimental - a living example of old-school charm.

You like:
Tobacco, leather and liquor. You're swayed by dark, heady notes that remind you of cherished moments from the past.

We suggest:
Jazz Club from the Replica Collection by Maison Margiela, which delivers a woody, oriental and sweet yet intoxicating scent that - as its name suggests - is designed to evoke the feeling of being front row in a Brooklyn music venue. And if a fragrance can do that and smell good, we're sold.

For:
This is designed for men but is also great for women who prefer more masculine scents.

The romantic

The classicist

You are:
A lover of all things iconic, you prefer timeless elegance over new-age novelty.

You like:
Light and aromatic wafts of florals and spices, and comforting, sweet aromas such as bergamot and amber.

We suggest:
Bergamot, lemon, pink pepper and amber give TFK's Bindi Ballet fragrance a unique and refreshing depth. It's impossible to dislike, but those who love their classics will get a kick out of the fresh and familiar blend of scents.

For:
Women.

The adventurous type

You are:
Bold, courageous, and more often than not you're found up a mountain.

You like:
Fresh or floral notes (orange, lemon, jasmine and magnolia) that remind you of the great outdoors.

We suggest:
We love Thameen's The Cora fragrance (exclusive to Selfridges) because it's fresh yet mysterious - you can't quite place the scent. It has a magical quality thanks to the musk and floral notes, and it's also unisex.

For:
Men and women.

The modernist

You are:
Contemporary and cutting-edge; you're always one step ahead.

You like:
Aromatic, clean and crisp smells - think light, airy and shower fresh.

We suggest:
Pushing the boundaries of modern perfumery, Escentric Molecules is based around a single note - Iso E Super - that mixes (and enhances) the wearer's natural scent, so no two people smell the same. You won't be able to pick out individual notes, but the overall impression is light and fragrant.

For:
Men and women.

The proper gentleman

You are:
Empathetic, adventurous and politically conscious, you feel as much at home at Frieze Art Fair as you do enjoying a pint in your local.

You like:
Woody and rustic notes like sandalwood, cedar, patchouli and tobacco.

We suggest:
Inspired by the frenetic energy of the Big Apple, Bond No.9's New York Oud combines warm hints of red plum, saffron and patchouli with uplifting hits of honey and orange zest. The odd note of rose punctuates the overall aroma, making it undeniably moreish.

For:
Men.

///

The free spirit

You are:
Smart, funny, mischievous - you are the life and soul of the party, and you always have a good story to tell.

You like:
Oriental substances like musk, vanilla and precious woods - anything associated with exotic travel and adventure.

We suggest:
This is your go-to fragrance if you don't want to smell like anyone else. Amber, sandalwood and oud make Alexandria II by Xerjoff dark and intense, while uplifting apple, cinnamon and rosewood add a touch of freshness. Expect to be asked what you're wearing all the time.

For:
Men and women.

A stroke of genius

If you thought fragrance was all about a simple spritz onto the skin, think again. From solid perfumes to hair and body mists, there are multiple new ways to wear your signature scent. Our latest obsession? Byredo's Kabuki brushes. Inspired by the traditional brushes used by Japanese actors to apply their stage make-up, Byredo has taken three of its most beloved fragrances - Blanche, Gypsy Water and Bal d'Afrique - and turned them into micro-fine powders that are contained in the brushes and diffused when dusted on to the skin.

Home sweet home

There's nothing quite like coming home from a hard day and relieving the stresses and strains with a welcoming fragrant candle or diffuser; one that's also guaranteed to elicit 'ooohs' of admiration from occasional guests. Tom Ford is one of the best when it comes to home fragrance (along with the likes of Diptyque and Frédéric Malle, of course), and his Café Rose candle is a firm favourite of ours. As well as the soothing scent of rose, there are subtle hints of coffee and spices, which will transform the ambiance of your room in next to no time. And relax…
