A dad’s guide to Father’s Day

Whether you’re celebrating with Dad, treating a sleep-deprived new father or remembering the good times you had with Pa – this Father’s Day, we’re following some fatherly advice to help us pinpoint the ultimate gifts for him.

“The dandy’s in the details.”

All those years of seeing Dad perfectly knot a silk tie or buckle up in the finest Italian leather belt has transmuted into our love (obsession?) with great sunglasses and an ever-growing bag collection (yes, Dad, we’re putting this one on you). So this Father’s Day, pay an ode to the big man by giving him the very best in show, from timeless designs from Salvatore Ferragamo and Canali to modern twists on classic styles from the likes of Acne Studios and Prada.

Our top accessories for him

Top of my wish list is a new pair of sunglasses. I’m not sure if my three-year-old’s budget will stretch to Acne Studios' slick take on the aviator, but here’s a not-so-subtle hint for anyone else who might be reading…

“You can always judge a man by his shoes…and jacket, and jumper, and shirt…”

Who knew Dad was such a sartorial pundit? Whether he’s currently front row at fashion week (as with our buyers) or just a father that understands the importance of putting your best foot forward, there’s something to learn from Dad’s natty dressing, which is why he deserves the best. For gifts that any dad can fit into his everyday wardrobe, go for smart staples from the likes of Canali, Oscar Jacobson, Paul Smith and Brunello Cucinelli.

“Fix up, look sharp.”

While Dizzee Rascal may not have yet brought little rascals into the world, his words certainly remind us of Dad’s lessons in grooming, from teaching us guys how to shave for the first time to memories of him liberally applying cologne. But perhaps it’s time to freshen things up a bit…step in Italy’s Acqua di Parma, America’s Tom Ford and France’s Diptyque: a triumvirate of impeccable scents and soothing skincare.

I like the idea of wearing a new smell that my kids have chosen for me – and even better if the bottle is personalised!

“True style is timeless.”

From elegant leather strap designs from the masters at Jaeger-LeCoultre and Longines to IWC Schaffhausen’s sporty Ingenieur (now an icon of this renowned Swiss watchmaker) – a new watch is a gift that can be passed down through generations, building memories over time. And what’s more, there’s no excuse for Dad being late with one of these around his wrist...

Our dads’ ultimate Father’s Day

"When you get woken up by your kids with a father’s day card and  a poem is written inside – nothing can beat that in my books.”

Sebastian Manes, Selfridges Buying & Merchandising Director

"The perfect Father’s Day for me is doing something that my son would love to do as well. At the moment he’s obsessed with fire engines, so we are going to a fire station for a tour. There is a high possibility that we will end up in a lovely country pub for lunch, too..."

Ben Hurren, Selfridges Buying Manager

"My ultimate Father’s Day starts with a badly made breakfast in bed served by the little one, followed by a stroll in the park. Then some time to chill back at home and bedtime stories (for the kids!)"

Jonathon Grove, Selfridges Senior Design Manager

“Who needs tech when you’ve got good taste?"

While streaming songs and snapping photos on your phone is great, modern-day gadgets can sometimes put function a little too far above form. Perhaps that’s why beautifully designed tech is having a resurgence, from retro-style speakers and vinyl sales soaring, to people rediscovering the art of shooting on an SLR camera. Whether Dad knows his Instastories from his Snapchat or not – this is tech that perfectly blends state-of-the-art functionality with enduring style.

“Savour the good stuff.”

There are a few things that inevitably come with the joy of parenting: sleepless nights, emergency suit dry-cleaning (bless the little one), and, sure, a few grey hairs. However, it’s also a time when many dads refine their tastes: take, for instance, his favourite tipple. With after-work pub trips a rarer occurrence, that hard-earned dram of whisky needs to be truly exceptional. So goodbye cheap larger and hello 20-year-old single malts and artisan whiskies from Japan – a gift most dads (and mums) are sure to appreciate.

And finally:
The gift of good advice for any new parents out there

"Simply enjoy as much as you can – I always think it could be the last day before they start ignoring me (before they become teenagers!) so I approach every day like it was the last one."

Sebastian Manes, Selfridges Buying & Merchandising Director

“Enjoy it. Throw yourself into it and have fun. It’s the best thing in the world.”

Ben Hurren, Selfridges Buying Manager

"Do as many things as you can with your kids: go on weird made-up adventures in the forest, build a den out of boxes and pans, dance in the kitchen to ‘80s electro. Their imaginations know no bounds and you’ll maybe even learn a thing or two yourself!"

Jonathon Grove, Selfridges Senior Design Manager

"My advice to other fathers would be to to have open conversations, because those conversations are the ones you will always remember. The purity of my twins’ mini-me responses melts my heart."

Daniel Baldwin, Selfridges Senior Visual Merchandising Manager
