Fine jewellery brands to know

Words by: Gemma Steele

A wave of designers is shaking up the world of fine jewellery, and now our buyers have brought these exciting names to Selfridges. Here’s our guide to 10 jewellers creating pieces to prompt the all-important question, “where did you get that?”

1: A STAR IS WORN

Sophie Bille Brahe

Danish designer Sophie Bille Brahe’s work focusses on an appreciation for raw materials, reimagining the classics while using simple settings to show off the natural beauty of gold, diamonds and pearls. Inspired by her family and their roots in astronomy, each piece has a story behind it, which, Sophie hopes, will grow as the pieces are passed down through generations.

2: KEPT IN THE HOOP

Yvonne Leon

Inspired by days spent unearthing hidden treasures in Parisian flea markets, Yvonne Leon pulls vintage charm into the 21st century. Her eclectic collections are packed with personality – from subtle mixed-metal bracelets to rainbow rings of gemstones.

3: LOVER OF PEARL

Mizuki

Not your traditional string of pearls. Using small, delicate pearls on bare chains, Mizuki designs jewellery that’s stripped back and minimal. The pearl necklaces can be worn alone or stacked to create a statement layered necklace. Every piece includes freshwater or Tahitian pearls.

4: CHAIN REACTION

Lauren Rubinski

Chunky chain necklaces make a bold statement. But, as anyone who has worn one will tell you, they aren’t the lightest or comfiest to wear. Lauren Rubinski’s Italian-made chains are crafted from hollowed-out, 14-karat gold links to make them surprisingly lightweight. The brand designs its necklaces and bracelets in a variety of thicknesses, making them perfect for layering.

5: TIMEKEEPING

RESELFRIDGES Watches

Looking to the future of fine jewellery doesn’t have to mean ignoring the past. Our RESELFRIDGES Watches collection is all about giving pre-loved watches a new home. Planet-friendly and an opportunity to invest in rare and distinctive styles, our edit includes the likes of Cartier, Chopard and Gucci.

6: TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

VRAI

Led by an ethos that promises “no mining, no emissions and no guilt”, VRAI has become the world’s first carbon-neutral lab-grown diamond producer, powering its labs with only renewable energy and crafting its diamonds from crystalised greenhouse gases. Look to them for engagement and eternity rings to make a statement of love as well as sustainability.

7: KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

Suzanne Kalan

Elegant and haphazard aren’t two words you typically expect to see together (especially not when talking about fine jewellery), but family-run brand Suzanne Kalan isn’t your typical jeweller. The designer’s daughter and husband both head up her production team, creating her signature scattered baguette gemstones. Fireworks were the inspiration for her most popular collection.

8: CHARMING

Sydney Evan

Sydney Evan pairs semi-precious beading with diamonds and gold charms. The result is designs that are joyful and playful – which plays into the fact that founder Rosanne Karmes named the brand after her young sons, Sydney and Evan. Karmes’ use of gemstones such as amethyst, sapphire and turquoise mean they can be bought as birthstone necklaces, too. And her beaded charm bracelets and necklaces are bound to make equally sentimental gifts.

9: SUPER SIMPLE

Mateo

Struggling to find jewellery that he liked, Matthew Harris began his career with an elegant men’s jewellery range, Mateo, which he created largely for himself. It was only five years later that he made the jump into designing for women. Continuing with the simplicity of his men’s collection, Harris tweaks classic jewellery favourites, distorting the shape of hoop earrings and adding irregular baroque pearls to simple pendants.

10: PLAYING IT FORWARD

Delfina Delettrez

Disrupting the tradition-dominated fine jewellery world without being trend- or fad-led, Delfina Delettrez combines conventional goldsmithing techniques with innovative 3D modelling technology to create its handmade pieces. A descendent of the Fendi family, no less, Delfina gives us a glimpse into the future of fine jewellery. Her brand plays with mix-and-match earrings and has even created pearl earrings that can hold AirPods.
