At the AW24 womenswear shows, the message – and the fashion – was loud, confident and designed to stick around. Tailoring for the office has returned in a big way; and denim continues to be reinvented. We like to get ahead, so here’s our fashion editor’s guide on how to wear next season’s biggest looks now.

1. Corpcore

We’ll always have time for denim, and denim will never be far from the runways. But what’s next season’s twist? In short: baggy fits, co-ords and a whole lot of patchwork. Pharrell Williams’s debut menswear collection for Louis Vuitton summed up the mood best with matching denim jackets and low-rise jeans that nodded to the 90s.

VICTORIA BECKHAM AW24

1. Corpcore

There’s a new take on typical 9-to-5 dressing that takes its style cues from office attire in the 80s and 90s. It has all the markings of a corporate uniform but has been reimagined in unexpected ways. Victoria Beckham leads the way with a collection of pinstripe and neutral suits, sleek pencil skirts and the classic shirt and tie combination on the runway, where models held leather-bound portfolios to amplify each look.

2. Denim midi skirts

Baggy jeans, low-risers, bucket hats: the Y2K revival we’re living in continues to rework some of the 00s most beloved pieces. For AW24, the runways saw the return of the denim midi skirt. At Diesel, they were sandblasted, worn and tapped into the dystopian aesthetic that’s currently sweeping fashion. Over at Sacai, they came pleated and in heavy-weight twill, giving them a utilitarian smartness that makes them perfect for the office. Much like your most trusty pair of jeans, this line-up will have you covered for all bases.

3. Futuristic Fashion

Denis Villeneuve’s Brutalist science fiction sequel Dune: Part 2 isn’t the only thing prophesying a view of fashion in the next phase of human existence. At the AW24 shows, designers indulged their sci-fi fantasies of what we might be wearing in the distant future with clever clothing that fused physics with fabric. There were rubberised puffer jackets at Rick Owens and futuristic tailoring in recycled nylon at Prada. Over at Coperni, Creative Director Sébastien Meyer debuted his latest take on the Swipe bag, which is made from 99% air (yes, really) and 1% silica aerogel – the stuff that NASA uses to catch stardust.

4. The LBDs

As some of the most enduring items in our wardrobes, the little black dress and its sibling, the long black dress, need no justification for its place on the runway. They are, and will always be, those heroes that saves us in all sorts of sartorial dilemmas. At the shows, they came in various silhouettes and styles: cropped, mini and bell-shaped at Valentino, where the entire collection was a manifesto to the LBDs, and sheer and ethereal at Mugler. Need something to tackle all your summer events? Choose one of these.

GUCCI AW24

5. Cherry red

This plummy shade has been trending on social media ever since Sabato De Sarno debuted his vision for Gucci, where cherry red came glazed in the form of high-shine patent accessories. For AW24, the hue decorated everything from evening gowns at Bottega Veneta to cropped leather jackets at Khaite. As we emerge out of the darker months, now is the perfect time to play with a bit of colour.

6. The Y2K ‘It’ girl is back

Chloé’s newest Creative Director, Chemena Kamali, restored the feeling of ‘It-ness’ that the brand has become synonymous with by bringing back some of the its most iconic designs. There were festival-ready patchwork jeans, ruffled tops, frothy lace dresses and caped coats that Sienna Miller and Kate Moss made famous in the 2010s. In London, Aaron Esh span the ‘It’ girl look into something slightly grungier with skinny jeans (yes, they’re back) and slinky column dresses. “There were tonnes of pictures of Kate from that decade on our moodboard for this collection,” he told us after the show.

7. Mob Wives

It’s no surprise that on the 25th anniversary of The Sopranos, the mob wife – in all her oversized sunglasses, clashing prints and big, bouncy blowouts – has found herself at the centre of style. Not only is her beauty look being emulated on TikTok (where the hashtag has garnered more than 52 million views) but her wardrobe is being revered on the runway too. There were leopard print dresses and jackets at Zimmermann and Alaïa, and glamorously tied headscarves worn with big, chunky jewellery at Sabato De Sarno’s sophomore show for Gucci. Want to be the main character next season? Try this.
