Spring is on the horizon. It’s (almost) time to shed your cosy beanie and scarf and ease yourself into accessorising for fun again. Read on for eight ways to express yourself through this season and beyond.

1. Denim daze

1. Denim daze

From forever jeans at Bottega Veneta to Y2K-inspired maxi skirts at Burberry, SS23 runways were awash with denim looks. But it’s not just clothes: accessories have had a denim makeover, too. Bucket hats have become a mainstay over the past few summers, and Miu Miu’s embroidered version is an easy way to add a touch of the blue stuff to your outfit. If indigo isn’t your colour, though, look to Coach’s black denim tote bag.

2. You’ve got to be
kitsch-ing me

Novelty accessories are the epitome of fun fashion. SS23 runways saw their fair share of them, from JW Anderson’s fish-shaped bags to Judith Leibers jewel-encrusted gummy bear pillboxes. Go classic kitsch with Lulu Guinness’ lip-shaped clutches or look to Puppets and Puppets’ good-enough-to-eat bags for more wearable fun.

3. Blow it out of proportion

3. Blow it out of proportion

In seasons past, everything from bags to skirts shrunk down to their tiniest forms. But this time around, designers unanimously decided that it's time to go big. From Jil Sander to Bally, SS23’s accessories are supersized. If an oversized bag is too much of a commitment, go big on jewellery with Max Maras heavy-duty chain and pearl necklace.

4. Sculpt it

From Coperni’s sculptural Swipe bags to Dries Van Noten’s curvy heels, striking lines, architectural curves and geometric minimalism are all over this season’s accessories. Go for Alighieri’s gold bracelet, inspired by Greek mythology, to add drama to casual outfits.

6. Make it shine

Whether you prefer low-key silver necklaces or head-to-toe metallics, the SS23 collections are here for the magpie in all of us. On the subtle end of the spectrum, Hatton Labs’ exclusive-to-Selfridges tennis bracelet works with casual outfits. Or pair crystal-covered Amina Muaddi heels with one of Benedetta Bruzziches’ rhinestone-embellished clutch bags for nights out.

8. Flower power

It wouldn’t be springtime without florals, and this season, they’re in full bloom. Go bold and bright like Loewe, who sent bags, dresses and shoes adorned with giant 3D anthurium flowers down the runway. Or add drama with floral tulle opera-style gloves from The Vampire’s Wife.
