For the next instalment of Self-reflections – the series exploring our relationships with beauty and identity – we met supermodel, mother, and environmentalist Arizona Muse in her London home to hear her top earth-conscious beauty tips and how her journey as an activist has helped her grow as a person.

Arizona Muse is best known as a catwalk model with a conscience. Using her profile to raise awareness of the need for environmental change in the fashion industry and beyond, she invites her followers to join her in exploring positive solutions for living more sustainably. But how does she balance a love of beauty with her passion for environmentalism? And how has finding her voice in the world of sustainability given her a renewed sense of purpose?
We met Arizona to find out more…

The notions of female beauty are shifting so much, and so fast, and I’m so happy about that.

– Arizona Muse

Having modelled since the age of 19, Arizona Muse has spent most of her adult life in the spotlight, following a breakout season at New York Fashion Week in 2010 where she walked for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler. Yet Arizona’s at-home beauty routine is far more pared-back than your average runway-ready make-up look. Her top tip? “Finish all the products that are already in your bathroom! There’s no need to throw away good products because you are swapping them out for sustainable ones, but make sure your new purchases are coming from brands that you research and those that are doing much better things for the Earth.”

I like to think of it as every time I buy something I am casting a vote – with my money I am either supporting a business that is helping the earth and making it a better place, or a business that is polluting the earth and making it a worse place. And that’s an immense amount of power, and each of us has it.”

In between her jam-packed schedule of fashion shoots, talks and podcasts about environmental issues and Extinction Rebellion protests, Arizona always finds the time to look at what’s behind the label of her latest beauty buys. “Another tip for sustainable beauty is to always read the ingredients… and have a look at Project Earth in Selfridges because they have made a great edit for you,” says Arizona. With a focus on thinking carefully about not just how products make us feel, but their effects on the planet, Arizona gives a welcome reminder that together, our small choices can make a big difference.
