Here, we discover the story behind the collection, the products set to reach cult status and speak to Valentino Beauty’s Global Make-up Artist Raoul Alejandre about breaking boundaries, accentuating your individuality and revelling in the joys of make-up.

FOR THE DREAMERS: A CELEBRATION OF SELF-EXPRESSION

“Valentino Beauty is for the dreamers,” explains Creative Director Pierpaolo Picciolo, whose vision for the collection is to celebrate individuality, inclusivity and self-expression through the power of make-up. After years in the making, the prestigious fashion house’s first foray into beauty is a vibrant, versatile and innovative line-up that invites the wearer to dream up their own idea of beauty.

When it came to shooting the campaign imagery, Pierpaolo teamed up with renowned make-up artist Raoul Alejandre to create bespoke make-up looks for a cast of 16 diverse personalities. “It was really exciting to sit down with each person and get to know them on a personal level,” explains Raoul. “We all come in different shapes, sizes and personalities with something to say, so to be able to create make-up that is unique to each person was really beautiful.”

We moved from an aesthetic built on exclusivity to an inclusive one. We grew from a two-dimensional vision of beauty to a three-dimensional one where emotions, dreams and individuality are as important, if not more, as any other feature.

MEET THE LINE-UP

So, what to expect from Valentino Beauty, you ask. Well, first and foremost: colour. And lots of it. The collection’s euphoric kaleidoscope of hues feels perfectly timed for a calendar once again filled with feelgood events where we can rediscover the joy of experimenting with our looks. A whole spectrum of shades mirrors the colourful runway displays the brand are so synonymous for – from rich greens and corals to vivid pink and (of course) red. The hue coined ‘Valentino Rosso’ (‘rosso’ meaning red in Italian) is front and centre across the collection’s embossed packaging, which gives a nod to the brand’s cult Rockstud detailing.

Versatility and creativity were high on the agenda when it came to product design, with many formulas having multi-use benefits – from Eye2Cheek’s creamy powder that can be used on (you guessed it) eyes and cheeks or anywhere else you fancy, to the triple-ended Brow Trio that acts as your pencil, brush and pen all-in-one. Arguably their most innovative product is the Go-Clutch set – the ‘clutch’ on a chain houses a mini version of the Rosso Valentino Lipstick and Perfecting Powder (both of which come in six shades) that can be switched out depending on your desired look or mood that day. But for us, the most progressive (and exciting) part is the range of refillable options, not just for their 50-shade line-up of Rosso Valentino lipsticks, but for the Go-Clutch Perfecting Powder and Go-Cushion Foundation too – something still relatively rare in the wider make-up space.

And then there’s the formulas… The vast range of shades in the collection are complemented with a Roma-Light Complex™– a booster that adds radiance and intensity to colour, inspired by the specific luminous light found in Rome. You can find this in their Rosso Valentino lipsticks, which come in a satin and matte finish across 50 shades (from tomato red and fuchsia to a selection of nudes). The Very Valentino foundation comes in an impressive 40 shades and was developed after testing across 5,000 skin tones to ensure accurate matches for all pigments in the skin. It uses Light-Lasting™ technology to deliver a semi-matte finish in a light-yet-buildable formula that lasts up to 24 hours. For eyes, expect more long-wear, multi-use products – from a mix of textures in the Eye Shadow Color-Flip Eye Palette to the Twin Liner that has a precise liquid liner one end and a smooth gel pencil the other, so you can pick between subtle flicks or intricate, artistic designs.

RAOUL ALEJANDRE

We talk exclusively with boundary-pushing make-up artist Raoul Alejandre (who created the make-up looks for the campaign) to hear about his favourite products from the collection, his expert tips, and his own personal journey with make-up and identity.

What are some of the key values of Valentino Beauty that most excite and resonate with you?

Valentino has always encouraged inclusivity, which you can see across the campaign. You can see it in me as well, I’m not a ‘conventional’ artist, so it’s beautiful to see that they’ve trusted me in being part of creating the brand DNA. Valentino has always been at the cutting edge of bringing people together; they’re not afraid to work with up-and-coming artists, like myself, and they’re not afraid to deviate from the norm. I think that’s an authentic, important message to convey, especially at this time.

When you’re able to look in the mirror and point out things that you love about yourself and use make-up to accentuate those things, it’s powerful because it starts building this relationship with yourself. Make-up is such a unique experience to everyone, and it’s a tool that helps you reach new heights.

– Raoul Alejandre, Global Make-up Artist for Valentino Beauty
We love the campaign imagery and make-up looks. How did you translate your signature style as an artist, and what was the creative process?

I’m very much an artist that likes ‘more is more’, but after sitting with Pierpaolo and getting to know his point of view, it had such an impact on the way I view my work. He reminded me that less can be more, and it can so often be about small details and luxurious touches to highlight the person’s natural beauty that already exists. Sometimes, it’s less about the make-up and more about honouring ourselves as individuals – we should be celebrating our scars or marks and what makes us unique.

Why do you think make-up, and our ability to transform, is a form of self-expression?

Speaking from personal experience, make-up helped me express myself fully. Growing up queer in a household that had no prior experience with queerness, make-up was a tool that made me feel safe. Locking myself in the bathroom and creating a world on my face was a way for me to tap into what was really at my core when the outside world was trying to morph me into someone I didn’t recognise. We grow up with these expectations we’re supposed to follow, but we never really get to ask ourselves what we really want, or what we really love about ourselves. When you’re able to sit with yourself and pull out an eyeliner or lipstick and create something new, or even make a mistake, that’s OK. The mistakes you make – just like in life – are so important when it comes to figuring out what you like and how you want to present yourself in the world.

Do you think the beauty industry is becoming more inclusive and diverse?

Yeah, absolutely. I know for me growing up, finding the perfect shade that matched my complexion was very difficult, but it’s beautiful to see it evolving towards a place of inclusivity that means being able to find the right shade, and undertones, for everyone is a necessity.

We missed out on so much this past year that I think summer is going to be a mash-up of everything we missed. We’re making up for lost time! I want to see people breaking the [beauty] rules, experimenting with their make-up and having fun.

– Raoul Alejandre, Global Make-up Artist for Valentino Beauty

Tell us about some of your favourite formulas and products from the collection.

I’m personally excited by the number of refillable products; beauty is an area where people are becoming a lot more conscious of their footprint on the world, which is really encouraging to see. The thing that initially stood out to me was obviously the formulations. I love the Valentino Rosso lipsticks – they glide on seamlessly and the colour payoff is amazing – it’s like a liquid lipstick in a bullet. They wear beautifully throughout the day too, there’s no feathering or build-up of texture on the lips. My favourite thing about the powders are how they melt into the skin yet still have a high colour payoff, so you can create a soft veil or build intense colour without needing layers of product. My final favourite is the Brow Trio – it comes with a pencil and brush, but the ink pen is great as you can draw fine hair-like strokes to the brow, and I like to dot it onto the skin to create tiny freckles, too.
