It's here: our new-season kick-off

As we usher in the start of a new decade (can you believe it?), we’re dipping our toes into the ’20s with a look at what fashion has in store for us. So, to kick things off, here’s the first of our 2020 fashion predictions: the three trends that you and everyone you know will be wearing in the new year – as forecast by the crystal ball that is the Resort 2020 collections (aka those between-season clothes we all love).

The colour: orange

Let’s be honest: if you’re looking for clothes that can be easily worked into an everyday palette of navy and black, orange is probably not the first colour you turn to – anyone else conjuring up images of over-zealous fake tans and the Netherlands football team? But, it’s steadily becoming fashion’s favourite shade, with brands such as new-to-Selfridges Petar Petrov embracing it head-to-toe. The burnt-orange tone of this satin dress achieves that elusive combination of statement-making and effortlessly elegant neutral. Fresh.

The brand: Bottega Veneta

It’s been nine months since Daniel Lee made his debut as Creative Director of esteemed Italian house Bottega Veneta to ginormous critical acclaim (he rewrote the luxury fashion rule book with pared-back minimalism, modern leather craftsmanship and unexpected details, after all), and the pressure of being the most-hyped designer of the moment certainly isn’t showing. For Resort 2020, Daniel wanted to shake up the idea of sophistication, telling Vogue.com that ‘Bottega is a very grown-up house, for sure… But it is something we can have some fun with, too – just thought-through fun.’ Cue pieces you never knew you wanted, such as twisted leather dresses (note the orange hue), outsized intrecciato-woven shoes in joy-inducing red, and, of course, bags in ever-more slouchy, cloud-like shapes. Welcome to the house of fun.

The key piece: trench coat

No guide to transitional wardrobe fillers would be complete without mention of a trench coat. The cover-up has gone from classic to cutting-edge this season, and was the centre of some of the most standout moments of London Fashion Week. Simone Rocha updated hers with asymmetric ruching and a string of pearls (naturally), Burberry adorned its iconic style with hundreds of sparkling gems and JW Anderson slashed the sleeves for an unexpected flash of bare arms.
