Culture and creativity are at the heart of Selfridges’ DNA. It’s what helps drives us forward and infuses everything we do. After a hugely challenging year, the importance of culture for the good of our livelihoods and the richness it brings to our lives has never been so vital. With this in mind, we’re delighted to launch Super Culture – our ongoing programme of events, films and installations (and much more) celebrating the most exciting ideas in the arts, both here online and in store.

Super Culture film series

As an ode to each of our home cities – London, Birmingham and Manchester – we’ve created a series of films that honours their unique cultural identity and celebrates our 2021 arts programme.

SUPER CULTURE AT SELFRIDGES LONDON

In London, we meet Selfridges’ past and present artistic collaborators, including our current in-store Art Block exhibitor William Darrell, our Picton Studios artist-in-residence Emma Witter and Bold Tendencies founder and gallerist Hannah Barry.

In Manchester, we capture the city’s magnetic energy and celebrate its musical ties through a beautiful poem, specially commissioned by Selfridges, by the Manchester-based poet and rising star P.A. Bitez.

THE LOADING BAY SERIES 

With Bold Tendencies and choreographer Sharon Eyal

 

To honour the launch of Super Culture we hosted a breath-taking six-part performance series choreographed by award-winning dancemaker and performer Sharon Eyal and curated in collaboration with our friends and long-term creative collaborators at Bold Tendencies. For the first time in over 100 years, the beating heart of our iconic flagship shop was open to the public.

 

Famed for her fusion of classical dance and underground club culture, Sharon’s compelling choreography has been performed everywhere from Dior runway shows to experimental ballets and rock music videos. With her partner Gai Behar, Sharon founded L-E-V – an artistic dance company that combines movement, music, lighting, fashion and technology to create performances that are as much at home in a nightclub as they are at the opera house. “I believe that when you search into something very deeply, the subject doesn’t have to be something new – the approach has to be new. It’s how you present it and how you share it,” explains Sharon.

Selfridges Hot Air presents: The Super Culture podcast

Tune into our new podcast series, hosted by writer Natty Kasambala, which explores the power of culture to inspire positive change.

Culture is something that can be hard to define, yet it has the power to absorb and excite us. It’s a fundamentally human thing that we all feel and understand. Our Super Culture podcast tells the stories of remarkable people who are inspiring change, joy and positivity in their artistic fields. As part of our Super Culture celebrations, we asked artists and friends of Selfridges to create artworks for our permanent exhibition space, The Selfridges Art Block, and our Duke Street windows at Selfridges London.

To celebrate the launch of the fifth artist to exhibit at The Art Block on G at Selfridges London, we caught up with William Darrell to find out more about ‘Restless Bulbs and Rotting Goodness’, his mind-bending kinetic sculptures crafted from recycled plastic. For Super Culture at Selfridges, we teamed up with three incredible artists and friends of Selfridges – Stacie Woolsey, Hamed Maiye and Jesse Pollock – to create works inspired by community, pleasure and new realities. Their thought-provoking artworks were on display in our Duke Street windows at Selfridges London.
