The Selfridges Beauty Awards are back! And what a year it’s been for beauty – from finding ways to adapt to the changes in our daily routine to launching exciting new brands and, of course, our Project Earth sustainability initiative.

On the quest to find the most epic products of 2020 that have brought little moments of joy to us beauty fans throughout this tumultuous year, we brought together buyers, experts and passionate beauty fans from across Selfridges to vote for their standout products of the year. From our Beauty Buyer’s go-to foundation to our Beauty Editor’s most-loved skincare – these are the best of the best! Cue drumroll: we hereby announce the winners…

ULTIMATE SKIN SAVIOUR

And the winner is:

Dr. Barbara Sturm – Hyaluronic Serum

Yes, we all know and love hyaluronic acid, but this serum takes the wonder ingredient to the next level. Backed by Dr. Barbara Sturm’s molecular approach to skincare, the formula contains both low- and high-weight hyaluronic molecules, which provide instant hydration to both surface and deeper skin layers. It’s the ideal product for combatting skin-drying central heating and icy winds this season.

ACE OF BASE

And the winner is:

IT Cosmetics – Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream

When it comes to finding the perfect base, it’s tough to find one that ticks all the boxes. Enter: IT Cosmetics’ CC Cream. From its dewy formula, buildable coverage and impressive SPF 50+, it’s a bestseller for good reason. The formula is a firm favourite with our Buyer Clare Lindridge, who says, “I am a very fussy foundation wearer, but this gets my vote every time. And for days I need extra glow, nothing beats the illuminated version.”

THE RIDE-OR-DIE LIPSTICK

AND THE WINNER IS:

Gucci – Rouge à Lèvres Matte Lipstick

There’s no denying Gucci Beauty is one of our most exciting launches of the year – thanks to everything from the decadent packaging to the dreamy formulas. Gucci’s chic lipsticks turned heads this year, and we’re particularly taken with its matte lipsticks, which offer high pigment in a surprisingly silky texture, all in a range of diverse shades. We can’t get enough.

Champions of sustainability

REDUCING WASTE

AND THE WINNER IS:

REN

With the launch of our Project Earth initiative, finding more sustainable solutions to our everyday routine is high on our priority list. REN is one of the brands doing just that by rehoming its bestselling products in 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. Some of our favourites include the Perfect Canvas cleanser – a brilliant all-rounder that removes make-up (without stinging eyes) and suits all skin types.

REFILL SERVICE

AND THE WINNER IS:

La Bouche Rouge Paris – Refillable Lipsticks

We all love a good lippy, but did you know one billion lipsticks are thrown away each year? Scary, we know. Enter: La Bouche Rouge, the Parisian brand that proves a make-up brand can be as responsible as it is luxurious. Its gorgeous lipsticks come in upcycled leather cases that can be refilled with an array of lipstick shades – from classic reds to everyday 90s nudes.

VEGAN FORMULA

AND THE WINNER IS:

Biossance

On the lookout for a good lip balm? “Biossance is the creator of the best lip balm EVER (vegan or not)”, says our Managing Editor, Catherine Nieto. And that pretty much sets the tone for the rest of this skincare line that has veganism at the heart of what it does. Every product is based on ethical squalene – the ingredient is traditionally sourced from sharks’ livers, but Biossance uses sugarcane plants instead. Pretty fin-tastic!

LAUNCH OF THE YEAR

AND THE WINNER IS:

Milk Makeup

If you haven’t yet used Milk Makeup, boy are you in for a treat. We’re smitten with its earth-friendly, foolproof formulas. Our Online Copywriter Crystal Rose puts it perfectly: “from the brilliant hemp-derived KUSH collection to the ingenious roll-up sticks – what’s not to love about Milk? It’s vegan, cruelty-free and all about creativity – I love it!”

BEST CULT CLASSIC

AND THE WINNER IS:

Le Labo – Santal 33

When it comes to street-stopping scents, Le Labo’s cult favourite Santal 33 is top of our list for 2020. Why, you ask? Well, the perfectly blended unisex fragrance combines cardamom, iris and ambrox with intoxicating leather and musk that gives it an addictive allure on all its wearers. Spritz with caution: people will stop you to ask, “what perfume are you wearing?”

HAIR HERO

AND THE WINNER IS:

Olaplex – No3 Hair Perfector Hair Treatment

“Olaplex honestly changed my life!” says our Merchandiser Emily Starr, who’s just one of the many fans that have propelled Olaplex to ‘Hall of Fame’ status. The replenishing hair treatment repairs and strengthens hair that is weak or damaged due to an abundance of heat styling, colour or bleach (something many of us tried out in those tiresome weeks of lockdown). Simply use as a 15-minute pre-wash mask once a week and watch it restore hair to its healthy, glossy former glory.

BEST IN BROWS

AND THE WINNER IS:

Anastasia Beverly Hills – Dipbrow Pomade

Coined the Queen of Brows, LA-based Anastasia Soare imparted her years of expertise into her eponymous brand. Our Merchandise Manager, Natalie Cowan, sings the praises of her Dipbrow Pomade: “I love it because it lasts forever and is the perfect consistency of cream and powder for easy application. Top tip: a drop of oil on the top keeps it fresh and stops it drying out!”

BEST MASCARA

AND THE WINNER IS:

Charlotte Tilbury – Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara

A big Charlotte Tilbury launch can cause quite a stir amongst beauty fans, and this mascara did just that. Combining a jet-black formula with a small, precise brush, it lifts and lengthens lashes into a curl that looks like you’ve used an eyelash curler – it’s the nemesis of straight, spikey lashes everywhere (and an essential for Zoom calls).

THE SUNDAY RITUAL

AND THE WINNER IS:

Sunday Riley – Luna Sleeping Night Oil

This year, we’ve all spent a bit more time indoors, which means more time for pampering, right? There’s no denying the pleasure a relaxing skincare routine can bring, and our Beauty Editor Grace Gargini’s evening skincare is never without Sunday Riley’s Luna. She says: “This retinol-based night oil tackles a number of skin concerns – from calming hormonal blemishes to fading pigmentation. It’s magic!”

BEST BEAUTY GADGET

AND THE WINNER IS:

The Light Salon – Boost LED Mask

We weren’t surprised to see sales of LED masks skyrocket over lockdown when salons closed. Those in the know wax lyrical about the benefits of LED, and this mask delivers clinically proven red and near-infrared wavelengths to calm inflammation, plump, hydrate and reduce wrinkles. And the best part? It’s made from lightweight soft silicone and is portable, so you can pop it on for ten minutes while unloading the dishwasher.

MINI MARVEL

AND THE WINNER IS:

Milk Makeup – Mini Lip + Cheek

Come on, who doesn’t love a good mini? They’re not just great for travel (whenever that’ll happen again), they’re also handbag-friendly and are a good way to give a product a test drive before you fully invest. Our favourite for 2020 is Milk Makeup’s brilliant Mini Lip + Cheek – the ultimate multitasker that can be dotted onto cheeks, lips, eyes – you name it – and blended with your fingers.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

AND THE WINNER IS:

Laura Mercier – Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Some brands are associated with reaching perfection for a particular product that becomes their ‘thing’. Laura Mercier’s thing is skin, and specifically this powder. You’ll find it in almost every make-up artist’s kit – and judging by the votes, in our make-up bags, too. So, why’s it so great? It’s just a powder, right? To quote our Beauty Editor, Grace Gargini: not all powders are created equally. The ultra-light texture of the powder somehow manages to set make-up without any signs of dry, cakey skin after hours of wear.”

BEST BLOCKBUSTER SCENT

AND THE WINNER IS:

Maison Francis Kurkdjian – Baccarat Rouge 540

Created by the lauded French fragrance house, this unique woody floral is a bright, sophisticated and flirty scent. Think the Marilyn Monroe of the fragrance world. Blending saffron, ambergris, jasmine and cedarwood, it was a firm favourite amongst our panel.

THE ICONIC PALETTE

AND THE WINNER IS:

Pat McGrath Labs – Mothership VIII: Divine Rose II Artistry Palette

Although Pat McGrath products received a number of votes across many categories this year, they took home our Iconic Palette prize because, well, look at it! The shades are a smart mix of soft mattes with iridescent jewel tones that are just gorgeous. As our Buyer Emily Saunders says: “this is the perfect palette to create multiple looks – be it bold and brave or everyday natural.”

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

AND THE WINNER IS:

The Ordinary - Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

We asked you – our brilliant beauty community – to vote for your favourite skincare product of 2020 and the results are in… The winner is: The Ordinary, with their ingenious caffeine-derived eye treatment. Why’s it so great, you ask? Well the lightweight serum is packed with antioxidants, caffeine and EGCC (a potent ingredient found in green tea) that reduces the look of puffiness and dark circles around the eye. It’s perfect for faking that bright-eyed bushy-tailed look after a late night of box-set binging!
