We bring you five key pieces to shop now, chosen by those in the know. In this edition, our Head of Menswear Buying, Jack Cassidy, talks us through the best lightweight jackets to wear this spring.

Jack’s interest in fashion began early: “my love and appreciation started with vintage – from a young age, I was scouring charity shops and car boot sales with my mum, and as a teenager I worked in a vintage store just off of Carnaby Street.” He has been part of team Selfridges for six years and now oversees all menswear buying – a role that, as he puts it, involves “working with the most exciting brands, designers, creatives and artists”.

Torrentshell recycled-nylon jacket

“Patagonia is the beacon for how to create desirable products that are sustainable, well-designed, and both practical and bold. Spring is the perfect time to wear more colour (after months of dark nights and dark outfits!), and this recycled-nylon jacket has an amazing lime-green tone. I like the simplicity of the silhouette and boldness of the palette and details – spot the silver-lined hood. This jacket is ideal for the weekend, and I’d wear it with a pair of Dickies.”

Panelled leather and denim jacket

“For me, the denim jacket is a staple piece, and this Bottega Veneta version is a very modern take on the iconic item. The graphic leather panelling is bold, and I love the contrast against the brown denim. I think [Creative Director] Daniel Lee has created an aesthetic that is sleek and refreshing, and his collections are filled with covetable ready-to-wear and accessories pieces. I would wear this jacket with a fresh white T-shirt, tailored pants and a pair of sneakers.”

CRAIG GREEN

Graphic-print smocked cotton jacket

“Each season, Craig Green takes the strong direction of his [past] runway shows and evolves his signature jacket silhouettes by creating them out of an updated material or colour palette. This jacket is a very Craig Green shape and is crafted out of the [designer’s] SS20 smocking technique with trompe-l’oeil torsos. Made from cotton, it is a good choice in summer when paired with wide-leg shorts.”

Sleeveless satin bomber jacket

“What I love about this Nicomede jacket is the contrast of references: an MA-1 bomber jacket collides with a 1950s women’s couture-style  back to create a completely fresh menswear silhouette. In spring, I often wear a hoody under my jacket to be able to respond to a rainy spell. The voluminous shape of this one means it’s perfect for layering over a hoody or long-sleeved [top], and I would contrast the duchesse-satin texture against a pair of vintage Levi’s.”

“This jacket is a timeless piece of Thom Browne design and is filled with his signature details: four-bar stripes on the sleeve, a patch at the front with garment details, and the red, white and blue tab at the neck. It makes the perfect spring jacket as it’s lightweight, water repellent, zips up, and has a streamlined, sporty silhouette. Navy is also a softer choice of colour for the warmer months – it would look perfect styled with a pair of neutral shorts.”
