TAKE 5:

SPRING DRESSES.

with Selfridges Lead Womenswear Stylist Molly Donovan

Welcome to Take 5: our regular roundup of the five key pieces to shop now, chosen by those in the know. First up: our Lead Womenswear Stylist, Molly Donovan, takes us through her pick of spring dresses.

Describing her personal style as “eclectic, clashy and vintage”, Molly styles all of our womenswear campaign stories for selfridges.com and compiles seasonal trend reports for womenswear fashion. For her, “personal style is all about what makes you happy day to day – my personal style totally changes based on my mood. Some days you want to wear a full Prada look, and some days you might just want to wear a tracksuit. I’m also obsessed with vintage, so there’s a lot of that mixed in, too.”

Let’s start the count…

CECILIE BAHNSEN

Puffed-sleeve shell dress

“Cecilie Bahnsen’s dresses are always so dreamy while still maintaining practicality. The puffed sleeves on this dress bring the right kind of drama to your daily trip to the shops (it’s the little things, right?), without you feeling overdressed. I love a pristine white dress for spring – I would wear this with clogs for a fresh-from-the-prairie look.”

RIXO

Jackie floral-print mini dress

“Rixo has been a fashion favourite for a few seasons now – its vintage-inspired dresses and separates are super cool and flattering on everyone. I love the retro feel of the print and the classic 60s silhouette. I’m always on the hunt for easy, versatile dresses that you can throw on and feel put together, and this one definitely hits that mark. I’d pair this with ballet flats for a Jane Birkin vibe.”

HELMUT LANG

V-neck satin midi dress

“I’m a firm believer that one can never own too many slip dresses. I’ve had an obsession with Courtney Love, a slip dress icon, since I was a teenager – if it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me. This classic black style by Helmut Lang is the perfect 90s-minimalist dream – you can add a layer underneath or wear it bare; possibilities are endless.”

BOTTEGA VENETA

Wrap-over knitted mini dress

“This was one of my favourite dresses on the SS20 runways – I love the simplicity of the cut and the asymmetric neckline is reminiscent of some of my favourite 90s style icons. I could easily picture Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wearing this back in the day, walking her dog on Mercer Street in NYC. I’ll be wearing it in my kitchen with some kitten heels.”

TAIGA TAKAHASHI

Eustacia midi dress

“Taiga Takahashi is an exciting new brand for us at Selfridges – I went to the showroom in Paris and was so impressed by the delicate beauty of his collection. I love this exaggerated take on shirt dressing – the extreme length and kimono sleeves make it feel really fresh. It’s such a pared-back shape that still feels elegant, and I love the luxe sheen to the cotton. I would wear this over some vintage denim with leather sliders.”
