LET’S KEEP IT MOVING...

Our guide to workout ’fits and kit

Words: Thea Bichard. Photography: Marili Andre

We’ve all spent the past year flirting with new fitness platforms, panic-buying resistance bands and wearing out the lawn with 5,000 DIY HIIT workouts. This January, it’s less of a gym rush, more of a race to reserve your spot in the living room, so the sportswear we have our eye on is more flexible than we are after a year of yoga with Adriene (or so we keep telling ourselves).

Whether you’re squatting with weights or wine bottles, swapping treadmills for TikTok routines or have taken up hula hooping, we’ve worked out an activewear guide to get those endorphins flowing...

TIME TO POWER UP

For starters, Samsung’s Watch3 4G will tell you that, yes, you might need to do a few more laps of the living room to hit your step count. Once you’re up, you might as well get the blood pumping (your smartwatch will tell you how your heart rate’s doing) in an equally hi-tech get-up. Lululemon’s latest styles suit sun salutations, squats or sprinting, or you can kit yourself out from head to toe in adidas by Stella McCartney’s fitness-with-flair designs – we’re talking star-jump-proof supportive crop tops and form-fitting, super-stretchy leggings that can more than handle the Girl Like Me routine you’ve finally nailed. Can we promise you’ll go viral on TikTok? No. Will the downstairs neighbours appreciate it? Also no. Will you feel fabulous? Oh yes.

LULULEMON – Scoop-neck crop top, Align high-rise stretch-jersey leggings and The Reversible exercise mat (all coming soon)

PUT THE ‘FIT’ IN OUTFIT

What was this ‘workwear’ we once spoke of? After a year of working and working out from home (and going to the gym, then not going to the gym), the lines between work, workout and casual clothes might as well not exist. All the more reason to retire your worn-out joggers in favour of a sleek new sportswear set, we say. Spanx Active’s designs combine sportswear with shapewear technology, while Ultracor’s high-performance styles and Varley’s versatile sets are real multitaskers. The crop tops can double up as a super-comfy bra beneath your shirts and tees while you’re working, then you can whip off that extra layer when it’s time to saddle up, stretch out or drop down and give us 50.

ALL THE GEAR…

…and plenty of ideas, thank you very much. We’ve pulled together a fitness kit for whichever type of workout you fancy – we’re talking low-key yoga in the living room, a bike ride down the road, bouncing a basketball in the park or doing enough kettlebell swings to set your glutes on fire. You don’t need an entire studio at your disposal or a personal trainer on standby – just pull on your new ’fit with your new kit when the mood takes you, and keep on moving.
