Ways to do Viva Magenta

 Words: Anish Patel

Pantone’s colour of the year, Viva Magenta, is as reinvigorating as spring itself. Cara Delavigne wore it to the Oscars, and British actor Emma D’Arcy has just bleached their hair in the stuff. Here, our fashion editor picks ten items to embrace it as the temperature ramps up.

1. Lady in red

Pre-loved Dior Lady Dior tote bag

Here’s an interesting fact: Dior first launched the Lady Dior bag in 1994 with the nickname ChouChou (a charming French term of endearment). A year later, the First Lady of France, Bernadette Chirac, gifted one to Princess Diana who became so enamoured by it that Dior renamed it in her honour. To this day, and much like its muse, it’s revered as a timeless style icon. Invest in this one, from our pre-loved edit, and you’ll carry around a little piece of fashion history.

2. A touch of hedonism

Rick Owens Banana asymmetric woven top

The season of the skin reveal is upon us. However, you can opt for a subtle flash over anything all-out skimpy thanks to the rise of keyhole cut-outs at the SS23 shows. Try it with this Rick Owens Banana asymmetric woven top, which embodies the label’s disruptive attitude but is easy enough to wear with jeans or tailored trousers.

3. Pulling power

Martine Rose x Tommy Hilfiger hooded sweatshirt

The luxury hoodie has entered the great pantheon of fashion fundamentals now that office dress codes have relaxed. This version by Martine Rose has been designed in collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, and can be worn under oversized tailoring during the colder months, or with this season’s acid-wash jeans when the warmer weather (finally) arrives.

4. Dopamine hit

Christian Louboutin Me Dolly patent leather mules

For shoes that are just as instagrammable as sherbet-pink sunsets, look no further than this pair of Christian Louboutin patent mules. They are part of fashion’s fixation with all things iridescent and 90s, but also fit the current trend for bright accessories and dopamine dressing. Wear them with light-wash denim and oversized shirting so that they really pop.

5. Throwing shade

Versace Maxi Medusa Biggie Squared acetate sunglasses

We’re in the midst of an oversized sunglasses renaissance (thank you, Tanya McQuoid). And anyone in the habit of hitting the snooze button once, twice or more each morning will be well acquainted with the vital role they can play in our lives. Our eyes are on this pair by Versace, which feature rose-tinted lenses and gold-tone Medusa amulets on the arms.

6. Don’t sweat it

Leset Zoe V-neck wool-knitted top and trousers

Leset designer Lili Chemla makes clothes that you could wear to attend a meeting and then have dinner out in, all without having to change. It’s no wonder, then, that she’s found muses in Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. This season, the brand’s signature Zoe knitted top and trousers are reimagined in Raspberry red. Need something that sits between a sweatsuit and a suit-suit? This is it.

7. Pillow talk

In Casa by Paboy cotton cushion cover

Maximalism is big in interior design right now. “Viva Magenta is a great colour to add to your home” says Selfridges Home Buying Manager, Eleanor Gregory, “it’s loud, robust and energising, and the perfect pick-me-up colour if you’re feeling glum.” That doesn’t have to mean Magenta everything, though. “This In Casa By Paboy fringed cushion is enough to boost your mood.” Plus, it’s been made out of 100% hand dyed cotton, making it part of our Project Earth Edit.

8. Sugar coated

Missoma enamel and gold-plated hoop earrings

If you followed our fashion week coverage on Instagram, you would have seen that candy-coloured enamel jewellery is in. For a brand that does it well, look to Missoma. They have mastered the art of creating versatile yet fresh pieces all at once. This pair of magenta and pink stone hoops have every day appeal, but can be dressed up for wedding season too.

9. Standout pout

Hermes Rouge matte lipstick

Nothing compares to a matte lipstick when it comes to staying power. They are long wearing, stand the test of time and keep application to a minimuml. This shade, by Hermes, will brighten any beauty look.  Wear it with lashings of mascara and a clean, natural base for an effortless makeup look. Plus, it's refillable so you can hang on to the beautiful case for longer.

10. Blooming lovely

Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish Divine blush pallette

Pat McGrath Labs has garnered quite the fanbase after it launched two years ago. The Skin Fetish Divine Blush continues to be one of the brand's bestsellers. This shade, in Electric Boom, is perfect if you want to add colour intensity to your summer make-up looks.
