Accessories for summer

 Words: Anish Patel

The flights are booked. You're tanning on your lunch break (almost). Now for the accessories. From commute-friendly sandals to festival favourites, here are our fashion editor’s top 10 picks.

1. Ciao, Bambino!

Jacquemus Le Bambino Osier wicker and leather bag, £1260

Who said that raffia bags were only for beach days and Provençal markets? This season, they’re designed to work in the city, too. Jacquemus’ Le Bambino bag is from the brand's ‘Le Raphia’ collection, inspired by the glamorous women of Positano and Capri. Channel that Amalfi energy with ecru outfits and lots of linen as the heat creeps up.

2. Buckle up

Coachtopia strappy logo-embroidered leather sandals, £175

As part of Worn Again, we invited Coachtopia to bring their upcycled accessories to the Wonder Room on the ground floor of Selfridges London. It’s a treasure-trove of brightly coloured and boldly patterned bags and shoes, which includes these logo-stamped sandals.

3. Crochet, you stay

Casablanca crochet bucket hat, £205

Heavily inspired by founder Charaf Tajer’s Moroccan heritage, Casablanca creates brightly coloured accessories destined for Mediterranean climates – or festival season. This crocheted cotton bucket hat is asking to be worn at every main stage, beach, park – you name it.

4. A fantastically capacious bag

Chloé Woody medium linen tote bag, £990

Succession’s Tom Wambsgans might mock oversized tote bags, but to us, they’re a fashion fundamental. What else are you going to use to stash everything from your sunglasses to your sandals? High on our wish list is this Italian linen Chloé Woody. The timeless design and smart silhouette mean you’ll be using it year after year.

5. Mood-boosting beads

Love Beads by Lauren Rubinski ‘Happy’ necklace, £120

Playful beaded jewellery is just as fun for grown-ups. Just ask Lauren Rubinski, the French jewellery designer and founder of Love Beads, who taps into childhood nostalgia with semi-precious stones and brightly coloured beads.

6. Make it a large

Marni frayed-edge raffia hat, £350

In addition to cover-ups and your trusty SPF, consider topping your looks with this season’s biggest, brightest hats. Marni’s wide-brimmed, tomato-red raffia version will bring main character energy to the beach.

7. Bubble frames

The Vintage Trap Pre-loved SL504-701 Fendi 90s round-frame acetate sunglasses, £355

“Vintage eyewear is for the individual and not the masses,” says Benjamin Estacio, the founder and designer of The Vintage Trap, which finds and customises rare eyewear from around the world. The current mood for anime-like specs has us eyeing up these 90s Fendi frames. There’s only one of each style, so snap them up if you like what you see.

8. Rainbow beads

Missoma 18ct yellow gold-plated brass and imperial jasper bracelet, £75

Holiday jewellery is a state of mind: anything that sums up that free-spirited, sun-kissed moment when we feel the urge to wear something the colour of a beach-bar cocktail. For 2023, designers are taking a grown-up approach with semi-precious stones. Cue this rainboe bracelet from London-based brand Missoma.

9. Raise a smile

Sydney Evan Happy Face single earring, £580

LA-based luxury jeweller Sydney Evan was founded to achieve one thing: to make people feel happy. This ‘Happy Face’ 14ct earring sums up that commitment – and does so with gold and diamonds. Sure, it might be small, but it’s charming enough to raise a big smile.

10. One for the kids

Little Hotdog Watson Cub graphic-print cotton baseball cap, £30

Is there anything cuter than seeing your kids in a sun hat? For a brand that does it well, look to Little Dog Watson. This banana-print baseball cap is crafted from cotton and lined with waterproof viscose, meaning they’ll be protected from both the heat and harsh UV rays.
