So, who are the brands that are working to change the face of beauty? Discover five of our favourites below: each one is striving to not only make us look good (still very important, of course) but also to do good for people and the planet.

NEIGHBOURHOOD BOTANICALS

The Daily Glow

Good for: shopping locally

Why: In a lab in Leyton, east London – just a few stops on the Underground from Selfridges – Neighbourhood Botanicals manufactures all of its vegan formulas. Each of its creations is housed in 100% recyclable packaging, and the brand supports several charities in the UK and overseas. Start introducing it into your skincare routine by waking yourself up with the zingy, all-natural The Daily Glow facial oil.

SUMMER FRIDAYS

Jet Lag Mask

Good for: bunnies, bad for blemishes

Why: You may well have spotted Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag Mask on a shelfie (or several hundred), and we’d wager that’s not just because of its Insta-friendly packaging. Beauty bloggers Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores Ireland have made sure that all of its stress-busting skincare is Leaping Bunny certified, meaning it’s completely cruelty free and never tested on animals. There’s a reason it’s named after the most carefree day of the week.

NUDESTIX

NUDESTIX x Estée Lalonde Nude but Not Kit

Good for: preserving nature

Why: When we say “preserving nature”, we’re not only talking about the no-make-up-make-up look you can create with Nudestix’s cosmetics – although, if we were, we’d be singing the praises of the au naturel Nude But Not kit. The brand has banished palm oil from its products, earning it a spot in our Forest Friendly edit that’s all about preserving ancient forests and finding planet-friendly alternatives to palm oil where possible

Top tip for refreshing your routine: when wet shaving, it is really important to prepare your skin and your beard. We recommend trimming your beard down as close as you can before applying products. The Acqua di Parma Shaving Oil is great to prepare and condition the skin. After the shave, use cold water and moisturisers to cool, soothe and comfort the skin – this is something that most people tend to overlook!

KIEHL’S

Calendula Herbal Extract Toner

Good for: supporting communities

Why: In the 169 years since it first launched as an apothecary, Kiehl’s has worked wonders for our skin (the Calendula Herbal Extract Toner is packed with natural anti-inflammatories, FYI). Its Future Made Better initiative focuses on sourcing naturally derived ingredients, using recycled materials and supporting community initiatives – it’s currently raising awareness of plastic pollution in London’s Docklands and plans to send people ‘plastic fishing’ in a boat made of recycled materials.

LE LABO FACE LOTION

COMFORT ZONE

Tranquillity Oil

Good for: going vegan

Why: Italian brand Comfort Zone is on a mission to create hard-working, earth-conscious skincare that works. It’s entirely vegan across its science-backed skincare range, which means you won’t find any animal derivatives in its ingredients lists (you will, however, find natural oils, vitamins and other treats recommended by the brand’s ‘scientific committee’ of experts).
