SS23 swimwear:

our buyer’s guide to this season’s new mood

This summer, a wave of timeless swimwear and statement-making beachwear is set to take over our holiday style. “On the one side, it’s brave and daring” says Grace Neal, Selfridges’ Women’s Body Studio Buyer, “on the other, it’s muted and taps into the quiet luxury look we’re seeing across fashion this season.” Read on for her guide to getting prepped for sunny days and holiday packing.

The one style that has you covered

“This season is all about matching your cover-up with your bikini or swimsuit,” says Grace. “We noticed a lot of crochet knits, as well as sheer, sensual cover-ups by brands such as Self-Portrait, Leslie Amon, Jaded London and Oseree,” she adds. As for her one hero piece when packing? “Easily a white Melissa Odabash cover-up – you will wear it every holiday for years to come. It’s timeless, effortless and elegant. Plus, you can wear it over any colour – what’s not to love?”

The little black swimsuit

“The much-talked about ‘quiet luxury’ look is at play in resortwear and swimwear this season,” says Grace. “It’s best summed up by black swimsuits and bikinis, which are beautifully cut and feature gold hardware or other sculptural details,” she adds. “In terms of styles, triangle bikinis with structural support are trending, as are classic silhouettes. A less-is-more approach has proven to be the most popular for swimwear designers.”

Clever swimwear to wear everywhere

“We’re seeing a return to beautifully crafted, minimal swimwear designed with longevity in mind,” says Grace, “especially in earthy, muted tones such as khaki, olive and brown.” It’s swimwear that can be worn beyond the beach, too: “the simplicity and versatile colours makes these pieces easy to style with relaxed trousers, maxi skirts and throw-on shirts,” she adds. “They’re hardworking and make packing for holidays a lot easier.”
