Selfridges Loves:

a sun-loving wardrobe

Woodstock – the mother of all music festivals – celebrates its 50th anniversary this August, setting the tone for a laid-back summer of love, fun and free-spirited style. Sure, we’ve swapped a muddy field for a sandy beach (can you blame us?), but this season’s holiday suitcase is packed full of Woodstock-inspired kaftans, grown-up tie-dye and bucket hats. Plus, scroll on for recommendations on what to read, listen to and drink while you’re sunning yourself. Right on.

Dries Van Noten – top  / Missoni – trousers / Loewe x Paula's Ibiza - hat (sold out)

The bucket list

From Woodstock to hip hop and then Brit pop, the bucket hat has made a triumphant return this summer after it popped up all over the SS19 runways at labels like Ganni, Palm Angels and Maison Margiela. This is the styling piece to bring your inner boho into 2019 – billowy dresses and woven wide-leg trousers turn downtown cool when worn with a bucket hat. And the best accessory to pair with it? Unsurprisingly, it’s the straw bucket bag.

Ganni – bikini top (coming soon) / Paco Rabanne – top and skirt (sold out)
Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh – dress / Ganni – bikini top (coming soon) / Paco Rabanne – top and skirt (sold out)

Souvenir style

The SS19 runways captured the adventurous spirit of travel and skin-tingling warmth of summer. Languid slip dresses, sarongs and paisley prints came together at Loewe, Chloé and Paco Rabanne – a collection that Designer Julien Dossena described as ’a wardrobe of someone's souvenirs’. Beats a fridge magnet anyday, right?

The great cover-up

A true ‘60s icon, the kaftan is both the most glamorous and the most practical piece you can wear on holiday. Give good boho-jetset vibes this summer with the cover-up’s new-season reincarnation – think tasselled, tissue-thin dresses and voluminous sunshine-hued separates.

MSGM – body (sold out) / Stussy – shorts

To dye for

Woodstock made tie-dye a countercultural icon, partly thanks to that iconic Janis Joplin head-to-toe look. Find yourself toying with tie-dye for the first time since you were a teenager? You’re not alone. The psychedelic pattern was splashed all over the SS19 runways at New York Fashion Week, in more carefully considered ombré tones and across pieces other than T-shirts, such as dresses, skirts and soft tailoring. Far out.

Those summer nights

Peter Pilotto’s runway gown is the ultimate evening dress for far-flung destinations (its burnt-orange hue is pretty much the colour of sunset). And it got us wondering: what is it about salty air and warm nights that makes us want to get just as dressed up – if not more so – than if we were about to walk down the red carpet? Answers on a postcard please.

Lack of Colour – hat (coming soon) / MM6 Maison Margiela – dress (coming soon)
Agent Provocateur – bikini top and bottoms

Costume drama

Our favourite part of a summer getaway? The excuse to wear only a bikini or swimsuits. Swimwear is so darn statement-making this season that it just begs to be worn all the time. Look out for (though, really, you can’t miss them) revealing cut-outs, cool, textured finishes and bold colours.
