Where  there’s a will to dress up, there’s a way. Let’s face it, after the year we’ve had, we’re all keen to head into 2021 with a bang. Whether your plans involve an at-home party with your bubble, an intimate dinner or the most glamorous of virtual pub quizzes, we are fully prepared with styling and beauty suggestions, bottles of bubbly and all you need to keep yourself entertained on New Year’s Eve (and beyond). So read on for tips, slip into something suitably dazzling, don your new favourite lipstick and turn Mariah up so loud the living room carpet vibrates. Let’s call it a night…

SIMPLE (BUT SPECTACULAR) PLEASURES

2020 has officially reset the dial for what counts as a night worth dressing up for – and besides, NYE will always be a great excuse for that. Regardless of your plans, don the jewellery you might previously have saved for a very narrow list of occasions – say, a Tiffany & Co. bangle or two. And to hell with dress codes – UGG slippers, whether paired with a glittery get-up or your favourite pyjamas, are the perfect attire for a night in. Not forgetting, of course, some suitably glam hair and make-up – after all, there’s no better time to experiment and perfect a new party look (read on for top tips from our make-up artist and hair stylist on the shoot).

Kukua wears UGG - Fluff yeah sheepskin slides / SAKS POTTS - Foxy V-neck shearling-trimmed leather coat, Saya reflective-print stretch-jersey top (out of stock) & Lissi shimmer high-rise stretch-jersey trousers.

To get Kukua’s curls, I worked the Aveda Nutriplenish Leave-in Conditioner through the hair while wet, combing it to bring out the natural texture. Then I dried the hair in sections – I love the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer with the wide-tooth comb attachment to help shape and create volume.

AMP IT UP

Regardless of how far you push your fashion, make this the time to try out bolder-than-usual make-up. To create one of the most striking looks in this shoot, Make-up Artist Bea Sweet amped it up with MAC’s Feline Pencil and Veluxe Pearl Eyeshadow. For those of you who prefer to make it all about the pout, reach for Christian Louboutin’s Silky Satin Lip Colour, and have your hair looking full of volume with a helping hand from the Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer or channel Maggie’s sleek crop using the Dyson Corrale™ straightener. If you’d like a few extra beauty tips before the big night, you can always book a virtual or in-store appointment with an expert from our Beauty Concierge.

This is a very dressed-up look applied in a dressed-down (and easy) way. After a few coats of mascara and metallic sheen to the eyes, I swept Louboutin’s Silky Satin Lip Colour in Theophila over the lips for a luscious finish.

GO ALL IN

A Big Night In is going to look different for everyone this year – the old schedule of predictable parties, overstuffed dinners and big New Year’s displays are out; bespoke, intimate affairs with our bubbles are in. But you can go big and go home – or, rather, stay at home. Why not go all in with the accessories, the menu and the entertainment? Raid your jewellery box for your favourite gems – we’re sure Missoma’s perfect-for-stacking chains and hoops will be on many a wish list right now. Oh, and be sure to get in the bubbly (Lanson Le Blanc De Blancs, anyone?).

A DRESS IS FOR LIFE…

If you’ve gone to the effort with your eyeliner, blow-dry, fragrance and fancy slippers, you need the right outfit to underpin it all. Velvet, sparkle, jewel tones and metallics will always be a favourite at this time of year. Look to Reiss, Claudie Pierlot and AllSaints to spruce yourself up for New Year’s Eve and the middle of next March. And, when festivities are incompatible with restrictive waistbands but still call for something dazzling, slip into one of this season’s knitted dresses from Gauge81 or Bec + Bridge, Harmur’s buckled, wide-legged jumpsuit or the super-sparkly, super-stretchy sequinned set from Rotate.

Kukua wears ALLSAINTS - Francesco metallic sheer dress.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD

The final (but by no means least important) part of the partying puzzle? The sheer indulgence of it all. This might come from your choice of entertainment or the measures of the drinks you’re pouring, just as it might come from the beauty rituals you treat yourself to or the (secretly very comfy) style choices you make. Our make-up artist, Bea, started by massaging Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair products for Kukua’s “perfectly smooth, hydrated and well-moisturised” look and used Milk Makeup’s vegan, cruelty-free Hydro Grip Primer to create Sonya’s fresh, glowy base. Follow these up with a few tried-and-tested treats from the likes of Bobbi Brown, La Mer and Tom Ford to look (and feel) your best.
