Calling all Monty fans – there’s a new rakishly handsome gardener in the hedgerow. I swapped my fishing rod for a bright yellow badge and am ready to guide you around The Garden Centre, which just sprouted at Selfridges London. I’ve been around the vegetable patch a few times, so Selfridges asked me to gather up a barrowful of their horti-couture kit, sage advice and ways to cultivate your relationship with nature. Let’s get growing...

My red hat isn’t for everyone, so Selfridges collaborated with some of fashion’s buzziest brands to create exclusive collections for The Garden Centre, along with a one-off line of Selfridges Merch. Think: style that looks equally good paired with a spade as it does your favourite trainers.

Hot off the flower press, here are my front-(hedge)row reviews of these fashion collections springing up at The Garden Centre.

These exclusive caps and tees say you know your way around a rake (and even if you don’t, no one will ever guess).

The picnic blankets, outdoorsy accessories, fashion made from recycled fabrics and style spun from earth-conscious organic cotton have me dreaming of alfresco adventures.

The boldly printed tools and tops are ideal supporting acts when you’re singing to your sunflowers.

Prada sees this season’s accessories and raises you a logo-stamped set of garden tools. If you’re more into alfresco dining than digging, the picnic set and deckchairs are very Milawn Fashion Week SS21.

Naturally, no garden centre would be complete without plenty of greenery and the gear you need to tend to it. Guided by our resident gardener, renowned horticulturalist Angela Maynard, we’ve curated the ultimate pots, pruning shears and pottering-around aprons to help tend to the plants we picked out with help from Moyses Stevens and Canopy Plants. As for this season’s hottest accessory? It has to be the exclusive Selfridges Compost bag, complete with brand logo and perfect-for-plants lining.

Being a humble garden gnome, my gardening know-how only goes so far, so Selfridges and I joined forces with Angela Maynard to bring The Garden Centre to life. Here, she shares a few seeds of wisdom for welcoming greenery to your home – no matter the size or your level of expertise.

Gardening can make us all feel good. On your next trip to Selfridges London, wander round to the planters on Oxford Street. Together with Angela Maynard, we’ve created a mini urban meadow of hardy plants and cottage wildflowers that can withstand air pollution from passing traffic. Or, if you’re in Manchester, take a family trip to Selfridges Trafford to sit among our Good Nature Garden. Once The Garden Centre comes to an end, we’ll donate the planters to local community gardens for everyone to enjoy.

In the meantime, for a special episode of our Good Nature podcast we follow two organisations striving to reconnect people with the land: Grow and MindFood. These two groups harness the expansive power of nature through gardening and growing to help improve mental wellbeing.

I have a theory that serenading your sunflowers or playing your tulips a tune or two keeps them happy. I’m still waiting for the science to prove it, but I do know for sure that shaking my hat along to a few of these garden-themed songs is great for pleasure-filled potting. Settle down with your rhododendrons and have a listen to my pick of guaranteed lawn-fillers.
