Selfridges Loves:

spring’s throwback accessories

Any Sex and the City fan will remember the scene when Carrie confidently states that no Manhattan woman would ever wear a scrunchie – well, now she may have to eat her words. Because throwback favourites – scrunchies, headbands, hair clips, barrettes, giant earrings, visor sunglasses, pastel bags – aren’t just back, they’re everywhere we turn.

Lele Sadoughi - velvet headband / Simone Rocha – khaki crystal tiara and floral crystal tiara (worn together)

Yes, those accessories we’d assigned to our list of fashion faux-pas are suddenly filling up our Instagram feeds – and looking (surprisingly) appealing. Once the preserve of Sloaneys and Sarah Ferguson (in her bouffant Fergie days), headbands are now the accessories of choice for influencers, gen-Z pin-up Zendaya, Chloë Sevigny, and even the Duchess of Cambridge.

From classic velvet to studded, ribboned, candyfloss-coloured silk satin, leather, and crown-like tiaras – they’ve been given a thoroughly modern makeover and wear-anywhere appeal that has us revising our ’never to be seen dead in again’ list (hint: it includes shell suits). Our Accessories Buyer Raffaella Fulgoni-Sheehan explains their appeal: “There’s something very nostalgic about hairbands. So chic. So Clueless!”

There’s something very nostalgic about hairbands.
So chic. So Clueless!

Perhaps it’s our decade’s obsession with the past (hello throwback Thursdays, endless film remakes, nostalgia-filled social media), and a reaction to the normcore trend that’s dominated our wardrobes, but these effortlessly feminine accessories are pulling at our heart strings again.

Take this season’s delightfully retro bags – think soft pastels, oversized raffia totes, grandma-style top handles. What they lack in practicality (the cult Shrimps Antonia bag is basically the fashion equivalent of carrying a dumbbell), they make up for in sheer, unadulterated charm. It’s a wry smile to the seriousness of minimalism. A riposte to unflattering trackies and ugly ‘Dad’ sneakers. A fist pump to femininity.

And lest us not forget the candy-hued hair clamps, gobstopper-pearl clips and twinkly jewelled barrettes that are getting serious airtime at the moment (thank you Valet Studio, Versace, Lelet NY).

Anyone else recall buying a Rachel Green butterfly clamp after watching episodes of Friends on repeat? As TV Presenter and hair accessory fan Laura Jackson says: “They take the most mundane of outfits and turn them into something spectacularly jazzy!”

All a bit prim and proper? Just add super-skinny Matrix-style ’90s sunglasses, or this season’s Noughties-esque oversized visors, and some statement giant hoops, and they’ll instantly turn your look from American preppy to Scandi-cool. Adopt a devil-may-care attitude and you’ve nailed that playful #Gannigirl meets #Refbabes vibe that we’re all hankering after – see our dresses feature for styling inspo.

With nostalgia seeping through every seam of our popular culture, is it any wonder accessories that remind us of our carefree youth are big news again? After all, when it comes to SS19’s accessories, the overriding message is to relax and have some fun. And isn’t that what we’re looking for right now?
