Fashion month is the perfect place to find fresh beauty inspiration – and this season was no exception. From a punk resurgence to just-kissed lips and ultra-glossy skin, the looks served up a feast for the eyes. Here, our senior beauty editor looks at some of the best beauty trends to emerge from the autumn/winter 2024 shows and shares how to wear them now.

Versace AW24

Punk meets glamour

It’s official: punk is back. Grunge-smudged liner was spotted backstage at Aaron Esh and Jason Wu, while an exaggerated graphic eye stole the show at Versace. “The wet inky-black eye feels rebellious but is still glamourous and sexy,” says Pat McGrath, the make-up artist behind the look. “It’s punk, but still very Versace.” The dramatic black wing was created by layering the Pat McGrath Labs Mothership 1: Subliminal Palette over the PermaGel Ultra Glide Pencil and finished with a touch of clear balm over the lid to create a luxe glossy effect. This was paired with lashings of mascara, polished hair and radiant skin to maintain Versace’s signature high-glamour look.

Glossy skin

In the frenzy that followed that Pat McGrath moment at Maison Margiela’s spring couture show, ‘mannequin skin’ was spotted in all four cities for AW24 but given a practical, more wearable spin. Erdem showcased glass-like, dewy skin in London, while Isamaya Ffrench was behind the glossy looks at Off-White and Ottolinger. Her secret? The Skin Lacq serum: a hydrating formula that’s packed with micro-pearls that gleam in the light. Apply before foundation for an all-over sheen, or tap into high points of the face for a more focused glow. Pair with a nourishing lip oil or eye gloss for the ultimate glazed look.

Think pink

After arguably the pinkest year ever (thanks, Barbie), pink make-up was particularly prominent this season. At Dior, hot pink packed a punch as its Creative and Image Director, Peter Philips, surprised showgoers with a vibrant look inspired by Marc Bohan, the house’s designer for 30 years whose favourite colour was – you guessed it – pink. Florescent raspberry pigments were added to the inner corner of the eye in a freehand application that gave a playful, spontaneous effect. As Philips explains, a chic, low chignon kept things “controlled and ladylike” and he completed the look with the Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation, Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil and left lashes mascara-free to keep things modern.

Harris Reed AW24

A metallic moment

From the silver tears falling from model’s eyes at Chet Lo to the full spectrum of gold and silver shimmers at Harris Reed, metallics are having a moment. Sophia Tilbury headed up the Charlotte Tilbury team, who were behind Harris’s looks and “inspired by his world of Victoriana and paper dolls, which we captured in the wide silver and gold eyes, doll-like lips and rosy cheeks.” The opulent eyes were created with bold splashes of silver and gold using the Luxury Palettes in Queen of Glow and Uptown Girl. Make this maximalist look more laidback by pairing a wash of metallic on the eyes, or a shimmer-infused lipstick, with a clean, pared-back base.

Cool girl hair

Over the past year, we’ve seen the quiet luxury trend manifest through effortlessly polished, barely-there make-up and luscious effortless hair (or at least locks that seems that way). “Cool girls that have walked in fresh off the street,” is the vibe hair stylist Sam McKnight went for at the 16Arlington show. Inspired by the model’s natural hair textures, Sam defrizzed and defluffed using the Happy Endings Nourishing Balm and added a soft s-wave to some front sections to create textured undone waves. Healthy hair is crucial to achieving this rich, glossy look so a reparative hair mask or conditioner is key.

A red lip refresh

A bold red lip certainly isn’t revolutionary, but they showed up with a twist this season. Models sported grey wigs and red lips at JW Anderson, while punchy tones that meant business accompanied glossy bare faces at Khaite. At Molly Goddard, Lisa Eldridge created a “scandalously lived-in, kissed-on blurred lip,” using red shades from her Velvet Lip Colours that were lightly buffed with a fluffy brush for a diffused, blurry cloud of colour. Take inspiration and blend the edges of your favourite red lipstick and pair with natural skin and groomed brows for a more relaxed take on a classic look.
