Flipping the usual production process on its head, Coach’s team designs each Coachtopia piece by thinking about its afterlife, adopting a circular approach to make sure that new products won’t end up contributing more waste to the world. Fashion-forward while creating backwards, Coach starts by using tannery offcuts, excess zips and industrial plastic waste, transforming them into a collection that looks and feels brand new. Then they go one pioneering step further: the bags – such as the Ergo and the Wavy Dinky – are designed with features such as removable screw-back hardware, detachable straps and monomaterial designs. This means they can be easily unmade, and their components recycled or upcrafted into new pieces.

To create a collection that’s truly community-minded, Coach brought together a group of “Coachtopians” – Gen-Z makers, thinkers, designers and activists who worked together on the concept and design of Coachtopia. And they want us all to get involved. Each Coachtopia product is embedded with a built-in digital passport that holds details of the materials, environmental impacts, and how the product was crafted.
