Van Cleef & Arpels was established in 1896, after Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a precious stones dealer, married Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a lapidary craftsman and diamond broker. Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels sought to establish one of the most iconic luxury jewellers in the world, and the label eventually found its first home at 22 Place Vendôme, an address it still occupies to this day. The brand became the first jeweller to launch a scent in 1976, with the creation of First for Women by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. In the decades since, Van Cleef & Arpels fragrances have continually shown that its expertise also extends into the realm of scents.
