Selfridges was founded in 1909 by retail maverick Harry Gordon Selfridge. Harry Gordon had a revolutionary approach to business, putting theatre and experience at the heart of the Selfridges brand. We continue to honour this rich and storied founding spirit by weaving creative experimentation, activism, and cultural enrichment through our extraordinary customer experience.


With over a decade of retail activism, our commitment to changing the way we shop to create a more sustainable future for people and planet is at the heart of our business. From launching Project Ocean in 2011, which saw us take ocean conservation issues to new audiences, through to unveiling ambitious targets and a commitment to a net zero future as part of Project Earth in 2022, we’ve continued to push boundaries and evolve our business to create real meaningful change for the retail industry.

Today, our Reselfridges initiative brings circular shopping to the forefront, with rental, repair, pre-owned, and refill services available in permanent destinations across all four of our stores. From championing innovative brands and future-facing products to introducing new shopping models and banning single-use plastic, we’re constantly exploring new ways to reinvent retail and change the way we shop - inspiring our customers to do the same.


Harry Gordon Selfridge opened the doors of our Oxford Street store with the manifesto ‘Everyone is Welcome’ - something which we continue to stand by today. We are working to continue Harry’s legacy in making Selfridges a truly diverse and inclusive environment in which to work and shop – for our teams, our customers and our partners. We have been developing more transparent and fair processes, as well as building skills and opportunities that support diverse talent and driving internal mobility.


Finding ways to make the world brighter is at the heart of what Selfridges stands for, and a key part of our ethos is supporting and empowering those in our local communities and beyond. Together with our team members and customers, we work with several charity partners in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Leicester to help make a positive difference to our communities.


Our expert buying teams scour the globe for under-the-radar fashion talent, emerging sustainable labels, and UK based makers. Our mission is to discover and platform the breakthrough brands who are designing a brighter future.
