One of Rioja’s most prestigious winemaking estates, La Rioja Alta was founded by five Riojan and Basque families in 1890 – an auspicious date which lends its name to the vintner’s flagship wine, the Gran Reserva 890. This garnet-red rioja is only made in exceptional years (three or four times each decade) from carefully selected grapes and aged for around six years in first-use American oak barrels, imparting a bouquet of spice, tobacco, vanilla, jammy plum and a hint of balsamic.
